Oscar De La Hoya Reveals Why Ryan Garcia Called Canelo ‘Jealous’

Barely a day remains for the fight that would decide if Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will remain the undisputed super-middleweight champion or if Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) will be crowned the new king of the division. As boxing aficionados prepare to witness the all-Mexican showdown at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on Cinco de Mayo weekend, it looks like Alvarez’s former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, hasn’t forgotten his longstanding beef with the champ. In fact, De La Hoya, whose company Golden Boy Promotions currently co-promotes Munguia, revealed why Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) shares his views about the Guadalajaran.

Talking to reporters, De La Hoya mentioned that he is no stranger to fighters talking ill about him outside the ring and stated that he prefers to keep his taunts inside the ring. However, he made it a point to add that Alvarez is unlike other fighters regarding taunts.

“But ‘Canelo’ talking all this sh*t, that’s all it is. It’s sh*t. The fact that he can’t be around me because the attention is off him. That’s a big thing for him, and it f**ks with his head. I don’t understand it because he’s a great fighter. I respect him as a fighter, but I don’t respect him as a person,” he said.

Garcia had formerly trained in the same gym as Alvarez, and his separation from his long-time trainer, Eddy Reynoso, caused a rift between the two, with Alvarez even claiming that he was disloyal. De La Hoya mentioned that, after this experience, even Garcia agreed that he was an attention seeker.

“Even Ryan mentioned Canelo’s a jealous guy. He cannot have the attention diverted to someone else, and I understand that,” he said.

“Three Reasons”

De La Hoya seems confident about his fighter Munguia’s performance against the pound-for-pound king. So much so that he even gave boxing fans three reasons as to why they should witness the Cinco de Mayo battle.

“Three reasons on why you should tune into Canelo-Munguia: All action, two Mexicans inside a ring at this elite level, and the passing of the torch. Jaime Munguia will beat him,” he said. Will the division have a new undisputed king? Or will Alvarez retain his throne? Tune in on Saturday.
