David Morrell (11-1, 9 KOs) might have had a hand in preparing David Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) for potentially facing Dmitry Bivol (24-1, 12 KOs).
There have been talks about Benavidez facing Bivol for the undisputed light heavyweight title, provided he is still in possession of the belts after a likely trilogy rematch against Artur Beterbiev. ‘El Bandera Roja’s last outing was against Morrell in February. While he was declared the victor by decision, trainer Ronnie Shields believes that fighting Morrell was vital experience for Benavidez in the event of a future Bivol fight.
Talking to FightHype, Shields opened up about Morrell’s fight against Benavidez and the Cuban’s plans for the future.
“A lot of people saw a great fighter against David Benavidez. It was a great fight, and with a little more experience, I think he could have won the fight. We feel great about what he did and where he’s at right now. I think we need to get him back as soon as possible,” he said.
Shields, however, is also of the opinion that fighting the iron fisted Morrell might have also prepared Benavidez to potentially fight a skilled boxer like Bivol. Calling Morrell one of the top three hardest punchers in the 175 pound division, he stated that those punches alone “without a doubt” prepared Benavidez for a Bivol showdown. While Beterbiev is undoubtedly a phenomenal puncher, he was unable to recreate the effect against Bivol that Morrell’s punches had on Benavidez.

“I think David Morrell showed he’s a true fighter. David Benavidez is one of the best fighters in the world. He knew that going in there, and I think we showed enough where people will say, ‘Hey, they’re going to have to deal with this kid,’” he said. “Benavidez is a really smart guy, and he can handle himself inside that ring, but Bivol also. I can’t wait for the fight. If David Morrell can get fight or two in, he can fight the winner. That’s the plan.”
“It Will Be The Trilogy Next”
However, it looks like Benavidez might have to wait longer to face Bivol. Talking to reporters, Matchroom boss, Eddie Hearn, shed light on the fights that he has in mind for his fighters.
“They should run it back, because it’s a brilliant fight. We also love Benavidez against Bivol. But for me, it will be the trilogy next,” he said. “The problem for Beterbiev is that Bivol is going to be better. So, we’re very confident going into that fight.
