Add FightsATW on GoogleWBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) has been active on social media over the past several days, teasing a fight announcement. On Monday night, Garcia appeared on one of the biggest network TV platforms, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and announced he will fight Conor Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) on September 12 in Las Vegas, NV.
On the show, when host Jimmy Fallon asked Garcia about his next fight, he said, “I can say that we are fighting September 12th and it will be in Vegas and the opponent, let’s just say, he is from the other side… He’s across the pond.” Fallon would make fun of the last part of the answer, questioning whether the opponent was coming from outer space, which got a laugh from the studio audience.
Garcia followed up and said, “I’ll just say his name just ‘cause I love this show. His name is Conor Benn. He’s talking a lot; he’s talking crazy. He actually confronted me at an awards show two years ago, and my wife was there. He just pressed up on me and grabbed me, so it’s a little personal. We’ll be ready to go get him.”
And just like that, social media was turned upside down last night, with all the conversation centered on Garcia vs. Benn. Fans had already heard about it this past weekend when Garcia mentioned it to Tekashi 69, although when he said it, Garcia had “hoped” it would be Benn. Monday night’s episode all but confirmed it, and if it was in doubt at any point, there is no turning back, as the fight announcement clip on Instagram alone has generated 2.8 million views on the Fallon Tonight page.
If it remains on that date, the fight will be part of a day that already features Canelo Alvarez facing Christian Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. So in the States, as it stands, you’ll get Canelo-Mbilli in the afternoon and Garcia-Benn at night. That has all the makings of an action-packed day of boxing.
