Boxers belong to that rare breed of athletes who put their lives on the line in a quest for glory. From the brutal volley of punches, they subject themselves to the unforgiving nature of the sport itself, which has often left many boxers pondering their own mortality. In a recent podcast appearance, former WBC interim lightweight titleholder Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) opened up about his faith and his narratives around life and death.
Garcia was a guest on the latest episode of the Full Send Podcast hosted by Kyle Forgeard and the NELK boys. In conversation, he was asked about his thoughts on what would happen to him after death.
“Your spirit can either go to heaven or hell,” he responded. “Hell is just the absence of God. That’s all it is. So now, you get to live exactly what you wanted to do. You love this life so much you never wanted to get to know Him. He called you. Just try to get to know Him. You kept on pushing Him away ’cause whatever you felt’ and however, you felt in this life. You get exactly what you wanted. You get to live in darkness.”
This was when one of the hosts asked him if he was trying to “justify religions.” Garcia added that even though people have criticized him for his relationship with God or considered it “cringe,” he believes in staying steadfast in his faith. He believes that it was his faith that got him out of the materialistic attachments and addictions that he had.
‘On My Vengeance Arc’
Meanwhile, with less than a month remaining, Garcia’s upcoming WBC super lightweight showdown with Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) is the talk of the town.
The duo recently sat down for their iconic face-off video, and Garcia wasted no time revealing his motives behind the fight. “When I first came into the game, I just wanted to make a bunch of money, and then I did that. But now I want to go for the legacy. I wanna go for the belts and Devin’s in the way. I’m on my vengeance arc,” he said.
The titans of the division are set to battle it out at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on April 20, 2024.
