Ryan Garcia’s Performance ‘Didn’t Affect’ The Devin Haney Rematch

According to Bill Haney, Ryan Garcia’s (24-2, 20 KOs) performance will not affect the Devin Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) rematch.

Garcia and Haney recently shared the stage on fight night as they fought Rolando Romero and Jose Ramirez, respectively. And now, with a fresh loss under his belt, Garcia might not seem like a viable option for Haney but the older Haney begs to differ.

Talking to Ariel Helwani on his podcast, Haney was nonchalant about the recent performances by both Garcia and the younger Haney. While he believes his son was ready to face Garcia on the fight night, where both faced other opponents, he expects the same October rematch date.

“What Turki (Alalshikh) put on the table, I agreed with. Devin agreed with, which was fine, you know what I mean. And right now, we’re expecting the same thing that we agreed to. The October date and whipping him out,” Haney said. Garcia’s performance against Romero was disappointing, to say the least. Fighting as a mere shadow of himself, he lost the fight via unanimous decision. However, Haney revealed that this did not affect the way his team looked at him as an opponent.

“It didn’t affect us. It didn’t affect the way that we look at him,” he said, while also adding that the promotions for the fight are underway. “You know what, I agreed to the fight, so I cannot back out of it. I think they’ve already done promotion for the fight leading up to it. Devin has spent time promoting the fight. We’ve spent time negotiating that fight, and for all intents and purposes, we believe that that’s the next fight.”

“The Playing Field Is Not Level”

Haney, on the other hand, was also criticized for his performance, with many calling the fight boring. However, daddy dearest was quick to come to his rescue and did not even hesitate to throw Canelo Alvarez under the bus.

“The playing field is not level. Devin Haney landed 70 punches against Jose Ramirez and was criticized for being boring,” he said during the same interview. Haney then went on to compare it to Alvarez’s performance against William Scull a day prior.

“Canelo Alvarez landed 56 against William Scull, the lowest combined punch total in CompuBox history, described as strategic and calculated. WTF,” he said.
