Mikaela Mayer (20-2, 5 KOs) and Sandy Ryan (7-2-1, 3 KOs) put on a war for the fans inside the Theater at the Madison Square Garden. It was a highly competitive fight, but in the end, Mayer would earn the majority decision (95-95, 97-93 & 96-94), making her the new WBO welterweight champion.
The opening round was a jab fest as both women were throwing countless left jabs. In the middle of the round, Mayer landed an overhand right hand that was the best punch of the round. Mayer dominated the second round with her hand speed and combinations, as Ryan could not figure out how to get inside. Mayer kept moving to her left, which neutralized Ryan’s big punches.
A fight broke out in the third round as Ryan landed some huge left hooks and a straight right hand that buzzed Mayer. Although she spent the first two rounds using her legs. Mayer sat in the picket and exchanged causing a roar from the crowd. The brawl continued between Ryan & Mayer as they fought most of the round in a phone booth. Mayer landed some hard uppercuts while on the inside, and Ryan landed straight right hands from mid-range.
Mayer dictated the pace with the left jab in the fifth round while Ryan threw desperate shots in spots. The round was won by Mayer utilizing the left jab. At the beginning of the sixth round, Ryan landed a huge left hook that rocked Mayer. Later in the round, Ryan would land another left hook which rounded out her best round up to this point. The seventh round was dangerous for both women as they landed some hard, clean shots on each other.
The pendulum swung back to the side of Mayer in the eighth round as she landed some clean combinations, which forced Ryan to hold. Although there were small windows where Ryan could have landed something big, she appeared to take this round off. Ryan returned in the ninth and took control of the fight. Mayer seemed to be the one gassed and was holding on at every moment she could. Both women went down fighting all the way until the sound of the bell. Ryan landed the cleaner punches in the last round, but Mayer also had her moments. It was a proper ending for an action-packed fight.
