Serhii Bohachuk vs Brandon Adams 2: Who Wins?

Serhii Bohachuk learned four years ago that even the most destructive punchers are, at their core, human.

In March 2021, the Ukrainian entered his bout with Brandon Adams a perfect 18-0, with 18 knockouts, convinced of his own invincibility. Then came the reality check. Though Bohachuk was ahead on all three scorecards, Adams turned the tide with a single counter left hook late in the eighth round of a scheduled 10-round affair. Trapped against the ropes, Adams saw his chance—Bohachuk absorbed a clean left hand counter poorly and failed to adjust. Moments later, another left sent the unbeaten prospect to the canvas and out of the fight.

The loss was more than a blemish; it rerouted Bohachuk’s career. Once on the cusp of a world title opportunity, he was forced to rebuild on the margins, taking smaller fights until he finally broke through with a victory over Brian Mendoza for a secondary title in March 2024. Yet even redemption proved fragile. Later that year, Bohachuk dropped a controversial decision to Vergil Ortiz Jr., despite flooring Ortiz twice and appearing to edge him on most ringside cards.

Now, after another stretch of rebuilding, Bohachuk (26-2, 24 KOs) finds himself circling back to the man who first derailed him. In boxing, one fight can alter everything—and for Bohachuk, Adams remains the ghost he must confront to reclaim his path.

In most professions, Adams (25-4, 16 KOs) would have been rewarded handsomely for a job well done. But boxing rarely operates like the real world. Sometimes winning is the worst thing that can happen to a fighter. Adams’ upset of Bohachuk should have propelled him into the most lucrative stretch of his career. Instead, it left him stranded.

The long-promised rematch fell apart almost immediately, with Bohachuk’s camp going so far as to dismiss the knockout as the result of a slip rather than a punch. Negotiations collapsed, and managerial and promotional conflicts soon compounded the problem. For three years, Adams sat idle—through no fault of his own—while keeping sharp in the gym. He even served as a sparring partner for Dmitry Bivol ahead of Bivol’s 2022 victory over Canelo Álvarez.

When Adams did return, he picked up two wins before dropping a split decision last November to unbeaten Greek junior middleweight Andreas Katzourakis. Ten months later, at 36 years old, he finally gets the rematch he has chased for four years but the landscape has shifted. Bohachuk, now 30, has fought nine times since their first meeting, most recently defeating Mykal Fox by unanimous decision, and he has aligned with trainer Manny Robles—the same Robles who guided Andy Ruiz to a shocking heavyweight title win over Anthony Joshua.

All signs point to a difficult night for Adams. Bohachuk has matured, shored up his recklessness, and learned from the very loss that derailed him. Adams, by contrast, has been slowed by inactivity. The story may come full circle, but the outcome is unlikely to repeat itself. Bohachuk should emerge with the victory.
