In a late-night post by Golden Boy’s Chairman & CEO Oscar De La Hoya, it was confirmed that his fighter Floyd Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) will get the title shot he has been calling for against WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs). The tentative date is February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; however, that part has not been confirmed publicly by Turki Alalshikh. Regardless of when it occurs, this is the step-up energy you want to see in young fighters who aren’t afraid to put their “O” on the line for a shot at the title.
Earlier in the day, Schofield tweeted, “We got the contract…done deal.” Although that would typically signify that a fight is ready to go, we have seen this play out too many times where the fight is not truly done.
We got the contract…done deal💪🏽

That’s when De La Hoya stepped in and put the official stamp on the situation. De La Hoya posted on X, “@KidAustin11 is officially the most badas$ prospect fighter today. Kid officially accepts to fight @ShakurStevenson. Let’s go!!!!”
Although Schofield isn’t currently ranked with the WBC, it doesn’t appear they will get in the way of this fight. Interim champion William Zepeda was supposed to fight Stevenson, but an injury to his hand delayed that fight from happening next. While Stevenson and his team searched for an opponent, Schofield campaigned publicly via social media to get the fight. His promoter, De La Hoya, even came out and said that he felt Schofield didn’t have the world-class experience at 22 to take on a Stevenson next but that he would speak to him about it if he truly wanted the fight. Well, I guess they talked about it and now Schofield has the opportunity of a lifetime against Stevenson.
Finally u talking some sense, Him first then I knock Zepeda off next 🦾 sorry in advance my guy u are a legend to me in the boxing ring!! https://t.co/SIQhmyjyRe

Is Schofield ready for a supreme pugilist like Stevenson? Regardless of what anyone thinks, Schofield feels he is ready, and in a few months, we will all know if he indeed was or wasn’t. One thing fans should remember, though, is that Schofield is choosing to take that risk when other fighters say that they will, but in the end, they don’t. Hopefully, that’s the start of a trend that continues moving forward in boxing. Who’s ready for Stevenson vs. Schofield?
