It has barely been a month since Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) retained his WBA lightweight title with a sensational 8th-round knockout against Frank Martin (18-1, 12 KOs). With a fresh victory under his belt, the boxing fraternity and fans have been curious about the next showdown in line for the iron-fisted Davis. And there is no denying that talks about a potential fight between him and three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) has created the most buzz. As Bob Arum confirmed a possible unification at the end of the year, former world champion Shawn Porter chimed in on why he believes the matchup is a good idea.
Porter was talking at his ‘The Porter Way Podcast.’ Speaking about Davis fighting Lomachenko, he is confident that fans would witness the best version of Lomachenko yet.
“I already know people are gonna do this to promote a fight with Gervonta Davis or Shakur Stevenson. They’re gonna say we’ve got the ‘old Loma’ back; this is the best Loma. It’s not the old Loma. It’s the best version of Loma we’re gonna get now. And in some ways, a better Loma simply because of how smart he is,” he said. Porter further mentioned that Lomachenko currently possesses the ring IQ to beat a fighter like Davis. However, he added that Davis’ experience as a fighter should not be taken lightly.
“I think the fight now, I think it’s evenly matched, but I would tend to lean towards Tank Davis at this point because everything I’ve seen Tank do and, not only that, I feel like he’s got the experience now to go up against Lomachenko,” he said.
“Decode The Shoulder Roll”
Meanwhile, Davis’ coach, Kenny Ellis, wishes to look beyond a potential Lomachenko showdown. In fact, he is confident that his ward possesses the experience and skillset to decode boxing legend Floyd Mayweather’s (50-0, 27 KOs) impenetrable defense.
“Gervonta Davis could decode the shoulder roll,” Ellis said on Instagram. “If Floyd can fight another exhibition, he can fight another fight. If he’s as great as he says he is, let’s stop spinning the fans, Gervonta vs Floyd.”
