Sunday Convo: Bruce Carrington is Ready For The Big Stage

It’s been years since New York had a promising contender come out of the five boroughs, but it appears that there is one now, and that’s featherweight Bruce ‘Shu-Shu’ Carrington (11-0, 7 KOs) out of Brooklyn, NY. Carrington scored a devastating fourth-round knockout over Bernard Torres (18-2, 8 KOs) on Friday night at the Hulu Theater inside the Madison Square Garden.

This was another fight that Carrington was being tested with as those in Top Rank needed to know if he was indeed one of their next contenders in the talent-loaded featherweight division. Torres came out in the southpaw stance and was tough on Carrington right from the start, which forced the 26-year-old from Brooklyn, NY to think more than throw punches. Carrington doesn’t get enough credit for his vision and strategic feints that set up his power shots later on in fights.

This fight was no different as Carrington started to figure out Torres’ rhythm in the second round and, towards the end, used those feints to show himself Torres’ vulnerabilities for the next round. Carrington started to land some smooth combinations in the third round, and when they entered the fourth, that’s when Carrington landed the big boom, which was a right hook to the head. Torres would land flat on his face, and the referee did not hesitate to stop the fight at that point.

Carrington was emotional that night as he scored another victory that set him apart from the rest of his peer group. Ironically, The Ring Magazine presented him with the 2023 Prospect of the Year plaque on fight week, but Carrington became a contender with one punch on this night. The other emotion running through him had to be that his brother “Ike” (Michael Hayden) wasn’t there to share the moment with him. Carrington’s brother was shot and killed in 2014 which is something he still thinks about all of the time. Carrington wears “Forever Ike” on his attire for every fight so that his brother can be there spiritually as he sees him reaching new heights after each fight.

Carrington has the tools to become a world champion in the future, including a babyface smile that advertisers won’t mind putting their company behind. With his current momentum, Carrington needs to continue to win impressively and do that against guys like Joet Gonzalez, Angelo Leo, or Ruben Villa. Carrington could be in those types of fights towards the end of the year, which would set him up for a title eliminator by next year.

The way things are looking for Carrington, he is approaching the doorstep of a title eliminator. He’s likely about three fights away, and seeing how well he’s been performing, that opportunity can come sooner if he looks great against the right opponents. Are we approaching the “Shu York City” era? It certainly looks like we are, and there will be plenty of eyes on him when he steps back into the ring later this year.
