Terence Crawford is Done With ‘All the Antics’

Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) is fresh off an impressive victory by winning the WBA and vacant WBO interim light middleweight titles in a showdown against Israil Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs). With these titles under his belt, many members of the boxing community felt that ‘Bud’ would be all set for his long-coveted fight against pound-for-pound superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs). While Turki Alalshikh’s latest statement undoubtedly threw a wedge on these plans, it now looks like even Crawford himself is tired of all the “excuses” that Alvarez has been putting forth.

Crawford was a guest on Shawn Porter’s ‘The Porter Way Podcast.’ In conversation, he revealed that he was done waiting around for the Alvarez fight. “It’s crazy, and it makes me laugh with all the antics Canelo is doing and saying in the media about the size, and he won’t get no credit. But Canelo been fighting smaller guys his whole career,” he said.

Notably, Crawford will have to move up two weight classes to face Alvarez at 168. ‘Bud’ further continued that Alvarez has been making his own catchweight for years. He even pointed out that the Guadalajaran boxer fought smaller fighters like Floyd Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) and Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs), among others. However, he did not make much money in any of these fights (except the Mayweather bout).

“But yet, and still, he has all these excuses why he don’t want to take a fight with me. If it’s all about business, then you’re doing good business. If I’m easy work, I heard him say I’m easy work, if I was easy work, then you would take all that money that he’s offering you,” he said. “I’m a threat to him. I’m a threat to his legacy.”

“Canelo Would Be Too Big And Too Strong For Him”

Not everyone is of the opinion that the Alvarez fight is a cakewalk for Crawford. In fact, boxing trainer Bob Santos believes that fighting at 168 would be too big a jump for ‘Bud.’

“I think it’ll be a step too big for him, but he has earned the right to try it. Well, I think that’s true but we have to remember that what makes a guy like Crawford great is challenges. That’s why he’s great. That’s why he’s done what he’s done. Now, that said, I think Canelo would be too big and too strong for him at 168. I could be wrong. He could prove us wrong,” he said in an interview with BoxingScene. However, Santos added that with his performances, Crawford has earned the right to challenge Alvarez. He added that if Crawford could exploit any of Alvarez’s weaknesses, he is a good fighter.
