The WBC Announced Christian Mbilli As Their New Super Middleweight Champion

The super middleweight division picture is getting clearer, as on Tuesday, the WBC (World Boxing Council) announced that the undefeated Christian Mbilli has been elevated from interim champion to full champion.

The 30-year-old Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) from Yaoundé, Cameroon, is fresh off a Fight of the Year candidate against Lester Martinez in September, which ended in a draw. There were talks that Mbilli could face top fighters like Canelo Alvarez, Jaime Munguia, and others in the division, but one by one, those fights didn’t come together. Whether it was a lack of interest from those opponents or bigger purses elsewhere that were unclear, this recent move to make Mbilli the full champion changes the landscape at 168.

News started spreading this month that top contender Hamzah Sheeraz might be the fighter to accept the challenge of facing Mbilli after rematch talks with Lester Martinez seemed to fall apart. No matter who Mbilli fights next, it will definitely catch the attention of the boxing world.

During the WBC’s weekly press conference where the news of Mbilli’s promotion was announced, the sanctioning body president Mauricio Sulaimán stated the following:

You are a champion we are incredibly proud of. Christian has been part of our organization for a long time; he was the WBC Continental Americas champion, making 9 successful defenses before becoming the interim champion. You and Lester Martinez put on a spectacular fight—the best of 2025. On this occasion, we are honored to present you with the Fight of the Year trophy and your belt as the undisputed World Champion at 168 pounds.”

News of Mbilli’s next fight should be announced in the coming weeks.
