‘They Had An Agenda’: Chris Eubank Jr Calls Out Conor Benn For Jeopardizing His Weight Cut

Chris Eubank Jr. (34-3, 25 KOs) is pointing fingers.

In a day, ‘Next Gen’ will put generational rivalry to the test with a showdown against Conor Benn (23-0, 14 KOs). The recent weight cut saw things go south for Eubank after he was hit with a massive fine after missing weight, and Eubank knows exactly who is to blame.

Talking to BBC Sport, Eubank expressed his disappointment in not making weight. Moreover, he revealed that Benn’s team is to blame for derailing his weight cut.

“It stings that I was 0.05lbs away from the limit, and now I’ll have to pay half a million to someone. These are the people you are dealing with. They closed the scales off early,” he said. The weigh-ins were scheduled for 11 am on Friday, but Eubank was said to have arrived more than an hour late. Eubank initially scaled 160.2 lbs. and then, after he tried for a second time, 160.5 lbs. This is just a little over 50 grams above the required weight.

The duo is also subject to a 10-pound rehydration clause, which both fighters met on Saturday morning. While a measly 50 grams is not enough to cancel the fight entirely, it certainly had the ability to affect Eubank’s wallet big time. He has currently been fined $500,000 as a penalty for missing weight.

And Eubank is certain that Benn and his team are trying to take ‘a large chunk of money’ from him. “I asked to go and urinate, but they said no. These are tactics people use to try and get under your skin, to try and derail you from the task at hand, which is to go out there and win,” he said. “They had an agenda – they wanted that money,”

“The Size of an AA Battery”

Meanwhile, many notable names in the boxing world are siding with Eubank Jr. Former cruiserweight world champion Johnny Neilsen found the fine unfair and the weight cut detrimental to Eubank Jr’s performance. “Chris came in the size of an AA battery overweight, and it has cost him £375,000. But, worse than that, I think it could now cost him the fight,” he said.

“Chris looked on point physically, but it drained him to get down to the weight. Working out, sweating that much but still missing the mark will leave him dry as a bone and that will have an effect. It can be dangerous because of how it depletes you.”
