Add FightsATW on GoogleThe Anthony Joshua (30-4, 27 KOs) vs. Tyson Fury (36-2-1, 25 KOs) saga continues to be a war of interviews on social media, but in the end, we still don’t have an official announcement about when the fight is taking place and, most importantly, where. Fury has been posting videos on social media over the last few days, calling out Joshua and leaning toward the idea that the fight might not happen.
On Thursday, Fury posted a video from bed with the following message:
“Quick update on what’s not happening. I see Eddie is doing a lot of interviews trying to twist the narrative. The facts are, you don’t want the fight. Because if you did, you would be ready to rock’n’roll like I am…Tyson Fury has already said a 1,000 times that he will fight anywhere…Turki Alalshikh has paid tens of millions to fight, and you’re still acting like little bitches…I can’t make a coward fight. Can I?…I won’t wait for a sausage who has been knocked sparked out by Daniel Dubois for long. I’ve waited 10 years for this and have been ready every single time…I can’t make a coward fight…I will move on and there’s plenty of world champions out there who do want to fight, who do want to make some money.”
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn saw the video post and responded with his own post, which features a fight poster for Joshua-Fury with Wembley Stadium in the background. The caption then reads, “Sign the contract? We already have.”
And that’s where all this stands. What Hearn and others have said publicly is that the contract between Joshua and Fury has been signed by both fighters. According to Hearn, the problem is that the contract states the fight must take place in England. All reports say Madison Square Garden in New York City has been designated as the venue for this fight.
What Hearn is saying must be mostly true, because if it wasn’t, the fight would’ve already been announced. Hearn said in an interview with IFLTV that he received something from SELA regarding an update to the already agreed-upon terms. Hearn also mentioned that part of his issue with the fight being held in New York is the financial hit, specifically taxes, that Joshua would have to pay, which would make his purse about 30% (estimated New York State Tax) less than it would be if he fought in England.
Joshua-Fury missed several opportunities to have a face-off during their respective fights to hype this fight that is 10 years in the making. It’s getting dangerously close to becoming a fight that people could care less about on the calendar. Enough with the social media wars. Figure it out and let’s get this announcement done.
