Vasiliy Lomachenko Announces His Retirement-Social Media Reacts

Former P4P fighter Vasiliy Lomachenko has called it a career, according to a video he posted on social media early Thursday morning.

The 37-year-old Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) from Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Ukraine, was last seen in May 2024 when he beat George Kambosos Jr. for the vacant IBF lightweight title. Shortly after, rumors spread rapidly that a super fight with WBA champion Gervonta Davis was being negotiated, but for one reason or another, the deal could not be finalized.

Then Top Rank’s Bob Arum would tell the media in the fall that Lomachenko needed time to recover from some injuries and asked the IBF to give him a medical extension. This allowed Lomachenko to also reflect on his career and whether he even wanted to continue doing it. The answer came on Thursday, and it is no coincidence that it coincides with Top Rank’s deal with ESPN coming to an end in July.

Top Rank released the following statement:

“Following a remarkable professional career, the great Vasiliy Lomachenko announced his retirement from boxing. Top Rank has been privileged to promote “Loma” for the entirety of his historic journey, which included world titles in three weight classes and recognition as the sport’s preeminent pound-for-pound fighter.

Lomachenko tied a boxing record by winning a world title in his third professional bout and became a three-weight world champion in 12 fights, setting a new standard in the sport.

Before turning pro, he had an incomparable amateur record of 396-1, winning a pair of Olympic and World Championship gold medals for his native Ukraine. In 2022, he put his career on hold, returning to his homeland to join a territorial defense battalion after the Russian invasion.

Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum said, “It’s been an honor for all of us at Top Rank to promote the pro boxing career of Vasiliy Lomachenko. He was a generational champion, and we will all miss his participation in the sport.”

Although Lomachenko accomplished a great deal in the sport, he had a love-hate relationship with the fans, as some saw him as an all-time great, while others viewed him as a fighter whose amateur accomplishments carried him throughout his career. Here are some reactions from X following Lomachenko’s decision to retire from the sport.
