Who is Jake Paul?

Jake Paul is an American social media personality, professional boxer and boxing promoter. He is the younger brother of internet personality and WWE wrestler Logan Paul.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1997, Paul rose to prominence via his YouTube channel, Jake Paul Productions, which now has over 20 million subscribers. He also featured on the Disney Channel for a while. This further boosted Jake’s popularity. Paul has also been involved in the music industry. He has released one EP and 12 singles.

Since 2018, Paul has been around the sport of boxing. He has had one amateur bout and eight professional contests. As well as being active in the ring, Paul has set up his own promotional company, Most Valuable Promotions, and manages elite female boxer, Amanda Serrano.

Getting Started and Building His Brand

Jake Paul began posting videos on Vine in 2013. By the time that platform was discontinued, Paul had over 5 million followers. He launched his YouTube channel in May 2014. His channel features Paul’s pranks and controversies as well as his hip-hop music.

Based on his growing YouTube popularity, Paul was featured on the Disney Channel show Bizaardvark in 2016-17. His stint on the show features him accepting dare challenges and performing them. When his time on Bizaardvark ended, Paul began releasing music singles and videos featuring the entertainment collective he launched, Team 10.

From 2017-19, Paul released music and toured around America with Team 10, although the group gradually disbanded as the members left one by one. Team 10 is now regarded as inactive. Despite this, Paul’s success with the singles he released and the tour saw him named in second place on Forbes’ list of highest-paid YouTubers in 2018.

Getting Involved in Boxing

In 2018, as part of a “feud” between YouTubers, Jake Paul, and his older brother fought amateur boxing matches against UK-based YouTubers Deji Olatunji and KSI. Jake fought Deji in the chief support fight, while Logan Paul took on Deji’s older brother, KSI, in the main event.

The bouts took place in Manchester, England. Jake Paul won his contest via 5th-round TKO.

After that, Paul transitioned to professional boxing. Although he has only boxed one pro boxer, Tommy Fury, Paul’s fights have attracted large audiences and performed well on pay-per-view. He has boxed fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib, professional basketball player Nate Robinson, and former MMA fighters Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley (twice), Anderson Silva, and Nate Diaz.

Paul, who is listed as a cruiserweight, did have a bout scheduled against pro heavyweight Hasim Rahman Jr. The two were supposed to tango in August 2022 in New York, but the event was cancelled after a dispute over contracted weights.

While Paul’s involvement in boxing isn’t to the liking of all fans, he is taking the endeavor seriously. He trains full-time at his gym in Puerto Rico and was trained by former cruiserweight title challenger BJ Flores. He has now recruited former three-weight world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley as his head trainer, while Flores has taken on an advisor role within the team.

Most Valuable Promotions Suggests Paul Is In Boxing For The Long Haul

As mentioned, Paul has also founded his own promotional company, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), in 2021.This indicates that while he realizes his time in the ring won’t last too long, Paul wants to remain a part of the boxing scene.

With his promoter’s hat on, Paul seems happy to work with other promoters and networks to make fights happen. His most high-profile client is Amanda Serrano. 19-year-old American lightweight prospect Ashton Sylve is also signed to MVP.

It will be interesting to see how big and influential MVP becomes in boxing over the coming years. Jake Paul will be around in the sport for some time to come.
