Will Terence Crawford Come Out of Retirement for Floyd Mayweather?

One of boxing’s GOATs, Terence Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs), recently announced his retirement following a sensational victory against Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs). Ever since this announcement, the boxing community has pondered about what could potentially entice the champ to break his retirement. And will an opportunity to step into the ring with the crown prince of boxing, Floyd Mayweather, be a good enough reason?

Talking to YouTuber Adin Ross on his livestream, Crawford shed light on what a potential fight against Mayweather would look like.

“It’d be a good chess match,” he said rather nonchalantly. “Floyd’s one of the greatest at playing chess, so it’d be a game of who’s gonna out-think who.”

Crawford’s words certainly ring true; Mayweather’s performances haven’t been the best over the last few years, choosing to fight in bland exhibition bouts rather than looking to preserve his legacy. He was last seen in an extremely lacklustre exhibition rematch against John Gotti III in 2024.

In fact, one could even argue that his last professional fight (against Conor McGregor) was the last testament to Mayweather, the boxer. All the bouts that followed, including the highly publicized Logan Paul bout, have done nothing but blemish his image, reducing him to a money-hungry boxer past his prime.

But will Crawford still pick this fight if it were offered to him?

He just has one response in mind, “Nah, man. Floyd is old. Floyd is done.”

“All-Time Greats”

Andre Ward is supportive of Crawford’s decision to retire. According to him, he has achieved all he possibly can as a boxer.

“I like it. What else are you gonna do? How much more money do you need? How many more training camps? How many more punches?” he said while talking to Carl Froch.

“Obviously, I think he’s one of the all-time greats.”
