William Zepeda & Giovanni Cabrera Face-Off Ahead of July 6 Fight

It was an overcast day in downtown Los Angeles, CA, as FightsATW pulled up to the Golden Boy Promotions building. The event was a press conference to formally announce the lightweight battle between William “El Camarón” Zepeda (30-0, 26 KOs) & Giovanni Cabrera (22-1, 7 KOs). This fight will take place at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA, on July 6.

After lunch with the other media members concluded in one of their conference rooms, Zepeda entered for a media roundtable before the live stream of the press conference on DQZN. Zepeda was peppered with questions about his thoughts on the division and who he wanted to face next. The latter is an interesting topic of discussion as things appeared to be pointing towards a fight with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson in July, but for one reason or another, it didn’t come to fruition. Zepeda and Stevenson are fighting on the same night, so FightsATW asked what happened with the Stevenson fight as the fans were looking for him to finally get his title shot.

Zepeda told FightsATW, “I’ve done my job inside the ring. I’ve been asking Golden Boy Promotions about all the big fights, and they told me it will happen in due time. I feel as though the opportunity to get a big fight could happen at any moment. I’ve asked Oscar (De La Hoya) to get me the Shakur (Stevenson) fight. The business side of it couldn’t get worked out for the Stevenson fight in July, but he told me to relax and that he’d take care of it. When the fight between Shakur and me happens, you will all be in for a big surprise.”

Zepeda kept saying that he preferred the Stevenson fight over any other lightweight champion and that a fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis would be difficult to prepare for because of his power and Ring IQ. Zepeda already looked in great shape as he winds down his training camp in the next couple of weeks before stepping into the ring on July 6.

Here are the quotes from the press conference.

WILLIAM “EL CAMARÓN” ZEPEDA, UNDEFEATED LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD TITLE CONTENDER

“This fight will be a very competitive fight and a very complicated fight. We expect for Giovanni Cabrera to come with everything that he has, just like how he has done in his previous fights. We know that he is a very strong fighter; to be able to go 12-rounds with someone like Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz tells us he is a very powerful fighter. We are preparing very well in camp right now to ensure we are ready to give a very entertaining fight to fans on July 6. I love to challenge my skillset against high level fighters like Giovanni Cabrera to prove to everyone that we are ready for the big names out there in the division.”

GIOVANNI CABRERA, LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD TITLE CONTENDER

“This fight is huge for me. This fight further proves what I believe I am capable of. I consider myself one of the top lightweights in the world. I’ve defeated seven previously undefeated fighters; I am used to fighting undefeated fighters, and this is exciting for me. These are the kind of fights that motivate me to rise to the occasion and just reach newer levels. I have great respect for William. He is brave and he has the balls to put his undefeated record on the line against me.”
