It’s going to be a busy fight weekend, with a huge junior middleweight unification between WBO champion Xander Zayas (22-0, 13 KOs) and WBA champion Abass Baraou (17-1, 9 KOs), streaming live on the Top Rank FAST Channels.

If you are worried about this main event conflicting with the one at Madison Square Garden in New York City between Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson, there is no reason to be concerned, as the Zayas-Baraou fight is scheduled about an hour before the ring walk in NYC.

As for the fight, Zayas is heading straight into a unification after winning the title in July by unanimous decision. There was talk of a voluntary defense against a less worthy opponent than another champion, but he decided that going straight into a unification was what he wanted, so here we are.

Abass is also avoiding the voluntary defense against a top ten guy after winning the interim title in August and being elevated to full champion once Terence Crawford faced Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The German Abass has waited his whole career for a title opportunity and made the most of it by scoring the upset. Will lightning strike twice for him, or are we witnessing the beginning of the Zayas era?
