New York City will be filled with Puerto Rican Pride this week, with the Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday capping off the week filled with events all over the Tri-State Area. That can only mean there will be a fight inside the theater of the Madison Square Garden. Junior middleweight contender Xander Zayas (18-0, 12 KOs) will put his undefeated record on the line against former world champion Patrick Teixeira (34-4, 25 KOs).
Zayas was last seen in December as he made quick work of Jorge Fortea and stopped him in the fifth round. Although Zayas was scheduled to return in February, his team & Top Rank decided it would be best to wait until June, when Zayas could headline his first event. Zayas has been making his rounds within the Puerto Rican community, and he will be fighting in front of a sold-out crowd on Saturday night. Is this fight with Teixeira too much of a test for the 21-year-old Zayas?
On the other hand, Teixeira recently fought in March as he stopped Edisson Saltarin in four rounds. Teixeira has shared the ring with former world champions and once held the WBO title before losing it to Brian Castano in 2021. This is by far Zayas’ toughest test so we are days away from seeing whether Teixeira still has one big fight left in him.
