Add FightsATW on GoogleWhat is at stake in a junior welterweight bout between Ashton Sylve and Joseph Diaz Jr on Friday at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California?
The obvious is that it is a crossroads bout for both. Sylve, with a record of 13-1 (10 KOs), is at an unfathomable spot in his career compared to three years ago. It will also be his first hometown fight, as Sylve is from Long Beach.
Diaz, 39-4-1 (15 KOs), has gone from a U.S. Olympian to a junior lightweight titleholder to start the decade to vaulting up weight classes and struggling for consistency. At 33, Diaz, a Los Angeles native, is starting to be on borrowed time in the sport and can’t afford another loss.
Let’s look at the storylines ahead of the upcoming bout.
Ashton Needs To Put A Bad Loss Behind Him?
Sylve was a major signing for Most Valuable Promotions. Then, he was knocked out by Lucas Bahdi in 2024. He has fought twice and recently joined forces with MF Pro. This is the first true test for Sylve since the loss that derailed his momentum.
Two things to keep in mind: this fight will happen in Sylvie’s hometown of Long Beach, California, and his knockout loss was a contender for Knockout of the Year, if not the Knockout of the Year for many outlets.
Sylve was a young phenom who turned pro young during the COVID-19 pandemic. At 22, he is now a six-year veteran. Turning pro young can be a gift, with the hype that it brings, but it can also be a curse. We have yet to see someone in the modern era, with social media, make the transition smoothly. Sylve is looking to be a redemption story, rather than a cautionary tale, and this bout serves as an assessment of what the future holds.
So Does JoJo?
It has been a rough decade for Diaz as he has gone 2-8. Yet, Diaz looks to be in his best form in some time as he tested Regis Prograis, albeit a diminished version, and Alexis Rocha. Though he didn’t win, he showed power at a higher weight. Diaz, a former 130 lb champion, is now fighting at junior welterweight
What Does The Eye Test Say?
The young phenom should separate from the crafty veteran Diaz. It is a two-part question of whether the younger fighter can use his youth and talent to separate, and how he absorbs a punch after being knocked out by Lucas Bahdi in 2024. Diaz has proven in his last few fights to be durable and reliable at a certain level. Sylve is the one who is ramping back up in competition, since a career-altering loss.
