Super lightweight superstar Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) is gearing up to fight for the WBC super lightweight title against Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs). However, his recent interview with podcaster Bobbi Althoff has been making the news, albeit for all the wrong reasons. In fact, it even made Garcia feel like he was “self-sabotaging.”
Garcia was a guest on the latest episode of “The Really Good Podcast.” The episode was awkward, to say the least.
Prior to the interview, ‘KingRy’ was the victim of a robbery. When talking about the incident, he stated that his watch, worth $54,000, had been stolen. He further added that he was relieved that his Casa Sudo wasn’t pinched. Notably, Casa Sudo is a drink. On the other hand, Althoff was unaware of this, and Garcia’s explanation confused her even more. She questioned whether the drink was worth more than everything he had lost that day.
“No, I was just making a joke. You are making me feel weird right now. I’m actually feeling very uncomfortable,” Garcia responded in frustration. Althoff, however, felt that Garcia was the sole reason behind his problems. “That’s not what I’m trying to do at all. I think you are doing that on your own,” she said.
It seems like Althoff’s response might have struck a vein and made Garcia doubt himself, as he quickly exclaimed, “Maybe I’m self-sabotaging.” On a somewhat lighter note, the episode also saw the former interim lightweight title holder don the boxing pads as he taught Althoff a few moves.
‘They should pull him out’
As the date for Garcia’s fight against Haney draws closer, his antics have undoubtedly pushed fellow fighters and fans to believe he isn’t ready to face Haney. Former world champion Duke McKenzie even accused him of not having the ‘traits of a champion.’
“I don’t really see that in Ryan Garcia’s makeup right now. He’s publicly said he smokes weed, drinks alcohol, and gets drunk regularly,” he said in an interview with TalkSport. “They should pull him out. Somebody should pull him out. Somebody should say to him, ‘Ryan, you’re not in any fit state to fight right now’”.
And if this podcast episode is anything to go by, it looks like Garcia might need a bit more time before facing Haney.
