Add FightsATW on GoogleAlthough WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) hasn’t announced a fight date yet, he has locked in a new trainer who may not have been at the top of fans’ lists of potential candidates.
According to sources who spoke to FightsATW on the condition of anonymity, Jose Benavidez Sr., the father of unified cruiserweight and WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez, has been asked to train Davis for his upcoming fight, which has not yet been announced. A few weeks ago in South Florida, Davis worked out with Benavidez Sr. to see if they could mesh well. It appears things did go well, as Benavidez Sr. now has the task of getting Davis ready for his next fight.
Reports have circulated for weeks that Davis’ return would be in the fall. Today on X, Davis and Devin Haney were going back and forth about possibly fighting each other. With Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday almost ruling out the fight with Floyd Schofield, this pairing with Jose Benavidez will make his next fight even more anticipated.

Regarding Davis’ longtime corner of Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis, it’ll be interesting to see whether they’ll still be part of training camp, but in a smaller role, given their deep relationship that goes back many years.
How will Davis look with Benavidez Sr. in his corner, and could Benavidez Sr. add anything to Davis’ skills at this stage of his career? All questions will be answered in the coming months.
