Devin Haney Calls Out Ryan Garcia for Going Out On a ‘Jog with Floyd’

Two-division world champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) is all set to test his mettle against super lightweight phenom Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) in a sensational showdown on April 20, 2024. The fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, will see the duo battle it out for the WBC super lightweight title. Meanwhile, it is worth mentioning that the talks for the fight had previously fallen out. In a recent interview, Haney demanded answers for the initial fallout.

‘The Dream’ was a guest on the MMA Hour hosted by Ariel Helwani. Moreover, Garcia, Eddie Hearn, and Oscar De La Hoya  were also in attendance. In conversation, Haney opened up about what conspired during the initial talks.

“Ryan called me out, we went into discussions, and then we fell out of discussions, and we all know what happened next. He went on a jog with Floyd. He went on a jog, and then he had a change of heart, so the fight fell out,” he said.

After the fallout, Garcia expressed interest in Rolando Romero (15-1, 13 KOs). However, the negotiations resumed after Romero’s fight against Isaac Cruz (25-2-1, 17 KOs) was announced. With the Haney vs Garcia fight in the books, Haney mentioned that it was an easy negotiation despite the previous issues.

“It was easy because I feel if two guys wanna make a fight happen, it’s not that hard. Of course, we were back and forth over the numbers. That part will always take time, but other than that, it wasn’t really hard for the fight to be made,”Haney said. He also mentioned that the duo got a “great deal.”

Garcia, on the other hand, revealed that he was excited to have the opportunity to fight Haney. In fact, he considers it one of his biggest opportunities yet.

“When I first came in the game, I just wanted to make a bunch of money and then I did that. But now I want to go for the legacy. I want to go for the belts. Devin (Haney) is in the way; I’m on my vengeance arc. I’m ready to get back in blood in everything,” he said during their press conference.

He further stated that he was going to come in hot and promised Haney that it was “going to be ugly.”
