WBC super lightweight titleholder Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) might be fresh off an impressive victory against Regis Prograis (29-2, 24 KOs), but he is all set to repeat the magic in a sensational showdown against Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs). As the boxing fraternity and fans await in anticipation of the proposed matchup, Haney made a rather controversial claim about the outcome of the fight.
‘The Dream’ was recently in conversation with The DAZN Boxing Show. In conversation, he touched on his fight against Garcia.
Haney and Garcia had previously engaged in negotiations for a fight after Garcia‘s win against Oscar Duarte (26-2-1, 21 KOs) in December. While these talks didn’t initially reach fruition. Haney’s father, Bill Haney, later told reporters that the fight was a “done deal” set for April 20th.
Talking about the upcoming fight, he stated that Garcia has always been a good fighter. However, Haney added that while he improved over time and became a better fighter, Garcia remained the same, a statement which he wishes to put to the test in April. “We’ve seen Ryan quit before, and I think this won’t be anything different,” Haney said. “Once you have that quit in you, it’s installed in you, you know how to do it. I think he’ll quit on April 20th.”
Moreover, Haney believes that a win against Garcia would put him on a pedestal in the world of boxing. “It’s going to catapult me. It’s going to prove I am the new face of boxing, I am the man, and I’m a huge draw,” he said.
“I’m in The History Books Forever”
Garcia vs Haney is set to become an all-American marquee fight. Haney will return once again to the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, a stage that has witnessed his growth as a fighter. Meanwhile, he revealed excitement about being in another marquee fight.
“That’s what it’s all about. After the last fight I said I’ve done the legacy fights, I got the belts, I’m in the history books forever. But now it’s about making the biggest fights happen,” he said. “And here we are, arguably the biggest fight in 2024. I think the biggest fight. It’s going to be a mega event.”
