Errol Spence Jr. Prepares For ‘War’

Three years away from the ring hasn’t made Errol Spence Jr (28-1, 22 KOs) overconfident; it has, in fact, made him a lot more contemplative about what his opponent brings to the table. As he prepares to fight Tim Tszyu (27-2, 18 KOs) on Saturday, there is no way he is going to underestimate his opponent.

Talking at his media workout, he revealed that he was in no way taking Tszyu lightly.

“I know it’s going to be a tough, grueling fight. I know Tim is going to push me past my limits. I’ve seen enough film on him to know that he’s going to come with everything. He looks like a strong fighter, a guy who is going to keep pressing forward, give everything he has,” he said.

Tszyu enters the fight with a record that looks mixed on paper, but the context makes him a far more dangerous opponent than his recent results suggest. Since 2024, he has endured a brutal run against elite competition, losing a close split decision to Sebastian Fundora after fighting nearly the entire bout with a severe cut.

He then suffered a shock stoppage loss to Bakhram Murtazaliev, before rebounding with an emphatic knockout of Joey Spencer, then falling to Fundora again in a rematch before rebuilding with two confidence-restoring victories at middleweight. Despite those setbacks, Tszyu remains a relentless pressure fighter with heavy hands.

Even though Tszyu has been beaten recently, he has consistently faced world-class opposition while remaining active and fighting with the same intensity. According to Spence Jr, this takes it a step (or many) further from a regular fight.

“It’s a war. Everything is going to be on the line,” said Spence Jr. “The hunger is still there. I am still willing to show that Errol Spence is still here.”

“Get Their Money’s Worth”

But is he actually ready for a comeback? The DUI drama aside, he has had a rough road to recovery, especially owing to the punishment he received both inside and outside the ring.

“I wouldn’t have come back if I wasn’t feeling great. I’m here to do a job. I am going to do what I have to do. Everybody is going to get their money’s worth. They’re going to see a great fight. It’s going to be very entertaining, and everybody is going to be on the edge of their seat,” he reassured.
