Floyd Schofield finally got his moment on Saturday night in Chicago as he earned a unanimous decision over Lucas Bahdi (20-1, 15 KOs) to become the new WBA lightweight champion.

The three judges scored it 116-110, 119-108, and 115-111 for Schofield (20-0, 13 KOs), who is going to be a father again at any moment. After the fight, Schofield didn’t call anyone out, saying he wants to enjoy this moment.

In the opening round, Schofield was the more active of the two fighters, flicking out his left and landing his combinations. Schofield’s jab forced Bahdi to reset consistently. Schofield landed his leaping left and right hooks, which Bahdi couldn’t counter in time.

Bahdi picked up the pace in the second round, cut off the ring, and landed a hard right hand, followed by a left hook that caught Schofield’s attention. Bahdi landed cleaner, more effective punches throughout the round, while Schofield spent most of it on defense.

In the third round, Schofield landed an overhand right twice, hurting Bahdi badly. Although he couldn’t do much more after hurting Bahdi, Schofield landed a left hook to the body that sent Bahdi to the canvas for the fight’s first knockdown. With seconds remaining, Bahdi survived the round.

Rounds four and five saw Schofield land big left hooks, while Bahdi snuck in his straight right hand, which buckled Schofield at times. Although Schofield controlled most of these two rounds, Bahdi’s punches suggested Schofield could be hurt later in the fight.

The sixth round was epic as Bahdi landed a huge right hand that badly hurt Schofield. When Schofield went down to one knee, it should’ve been called a knockdown. Schofield got up and landed a big left hook and an overhand right, which hurt Bahdi. They went back and forth to the sound of the bell.

Both fighters dialed it down in the seventh after a hellacious sixth round. There were many misses, but Schofield landed the cleaner punches throughout the round. In the eighth round, Bahdi threw one punch at a time, looking for the home run shot, but Schofield wouldn’t give him the opening. Schofield stayed busy with good footwork and popped the right jab to keep Bahdi at distance.

Rounds nine and ten were more Schofield, as he displayed his dominance. In the 11th, Bahdi landed an overhand right and stepped on him, sending Schofield to the canvas. The referee called it a knockdown and immediately began to count. Schofield beat the count, as he wasn’t really hurt, and finished the round using his feet.

In the last round, both fighters threw big shots to score a late knockdown, but it didn’t happen. After landing a big left hook with 20 seconds left, Schofield moved around and played it safe.

It was a very competitive fight and one that merited a title on the line.
