Henry Lebron vs. Derlyn Hernandez: Who Wins?

Let’s look at what is at stake this week with Henry Lebron vs. Derlyn Hernandez.

Lebron (21-0, 11 KOs) will make his debut for Salita Promotions on Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The card will be broadcast on Wynn Records Network.

Lebron is a quality, world-class Puerto Rican fighter who has yet to find the fights that will define him. Worse than being written off after one bad outing is the latter: fans being unaware of who you are. That has been the case for Lebron, who has found himself on undercards time and again, mostly on the prelims. The bout will be his second fight of the year and his first with his new promoter, as he aims to make a push to the top of the division.

Is Salita The Charm For Lebron

Lebron is a talented boxer with good wins over Andy Vences, Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz, and William Foster III. The problem is that dastardly thing we always bring up: momentum. He was signed to Top Rank but never managed to break through to the main card. After that, he bounced around, with his last fight on Amanda Serrano’s card in January in Puerto Rico.

Recently, Salita Promotions signed Lebron, and this will be his first fight with the company. Salita has been vocal about cultivating talent in Puerto Rico and keeping fighters active. An interesting case study to look at for Salita is how he revived heavyweight Brandon Moore’s career in a year and a half, to the point that you could make a case that Moore is the best active American boxer currently on a winning streak.

So far, no one has found a road map that can get Lebron to a title.

Don’t Sleep on Hernandez–He Sleeps People

Hernandez (14-5-1, 12 KOs) has the record of a journeyman, but his last performance was far from that, as he knocked out Abisael Cotto. Hernandez entered the fight having lost four of his last six, but those losses came against world-class opponents like Andres Cortes, Ra’eese Aleem, Jaycob Gomez, and “Pitufo” Diaz.

Hernandez is a big X-factor in this bout as well.

Did he catch lightning in a bottle? Was Cotto overrated? Or is Hernandez a confident fighter aiming to reinvent himself as a contender in the division?

Most importantly, credit to Salita Promotions for rewarding a fighter who pulled off an upset victory on one of their previous cards.

What Does The Eye Test Say?

Lebron is hard to hit. If “Pitufo” Diaz couldn’t land a big shot on Lebron, it is unlikely Hernandez will. Based on my set of eyes, is more about how Lebron wins than whether he will win.

What Else Should You Know About This Card? 

Kiria Tapia, the real star

Tapia has a huge fanbase in Puerto Rico. She looks to follow in Amanda Serrano’s footsteps as a Puerto Rican women’s champion, and being from the island her entire life adds to the story. Tapia is a decorated amateur with wins over current champions such as Mikaela Mayer and Tiara Brown. She turned pro in her 30s and is working her way toward a women’s junior lightweight title with her trainer, Ivan Calderon. While Juliana Vanesa Basualdo’s record might not jump off the page, one thing does: she holds a split-decision loss to Mikiah Kreps last year, albeit at 122 lbs. The fight should further advance Tapia’s career, who is nearing a title shot.

Prospects to watch

Bantamweight Caleb Tirado and junior lightweight William Colon will be featured on the prelims. Tirado signed with Salita Promotions and is unbeaten heading into his third fight. Colon, whom I remember from being on undercards years back, is a bit of a puncher. Though both are in developmental fights, both have the ability, at least to the eye test, to fight on the main card.
