As the years go by in boxing, stars from the past have kids who grow up to be fighters as well, or their siblings have kids who end up sharing the same last name as the famous fighter from yesteryear; Shane Mosley Jr. and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are just two of many. Some of those fighters live up to the name, while others don’t.

Victor Guerrero (12-0, 10 KOs) is a 27-year-old undefeated junior middleweight from Morgan Hill, Northern California, who now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is the nephew of Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero. He moved to Las Vegas in 2022 to pursue his boxing career, saying he is “Trying to write my own path in the sport of boxing.”

When you meet Guerrero, you notice he’s a well-spoken guy who is excited to be a fighter. He doesn’t try to put on a show, nor does he think more of himself than he is. Outside of boxing, Guerrero is like most people as he enjoys spending time with loved ones. He also likes to escape the desert heat from time to time.

“After the fights, I definitely like to enjoy myself,” Guerrero told FightsATW. “I’m a big family person. My girlfriend has family in Buffalo, New York, so after a fight, I’ll take a week off and go out there to enjoy the nice weather and get away from the 100-degree heat in Las Vegas. I like to be outdoors and live a simple life.”

He made his pro debut in 2019 in Baja California and wouldn’t make his U.S. debut until January 2024. After two fights in the States, Guerrero went to Colombia for two fights, then returned for a May fight in the U.S., earning his 12th victory. Needless to say, Guerrero has traveled for fights as he continues his journey without a promoter.

“Obviously, everyone wants to fight in the States on those big cards,” said Guerrero. “Unfortunately for me, I didn’t have a big amateur career, so it was kind of hard to get fights. People wouldn’t show up to the weigh-ins when they heard the last name Guerrero; it spooked them out. I had to get my experience in the pros, so I went down to Mexico behind enemy lines. It’s never easy, but it definitely helped me mentally and gave me experience. Now we are fighting in the States and full of confidence.”

In his last eight months, Guerrero’s been working with trainer Sid Edac and has gone 3-0 since pairing up with him. Being in Las Vegas also means the opportunity for world-class sparring. Guerrero has found himself sharing the ring with Carlos Adames, Caleb Plant, Nico Ali Walsh, and Tiger Johnson. All of it has been a learning experience and a humbling one.

As Guerrero continues to work on his craft and build his career, he hopes the right promotional opportunity comes along so he can focus on boxing full time. Until then, Guerrero has to earn a living, as he said, “Gotta get those bills paid.”

“I work for a restaurant and go in from 5-530 in the morning, and I’m out by 12-1230 [in the afternoon]. Right after, I hit the gym. The grind doesn’t stop.

“I tell myself, ‘I ain’t making the big bucks yet.’ Thankfully, I have a job that works with my schedule. I tell my coach, ‘I can’t wait to quit my job so I can focus on boxing 24/7.’ It’s a humbling experience. I feel like every young boxer has to go through that in the beginning stages of their career. Hopefully, within the next year, I can be boxing full time.”

After a few fights fell through in August and September, Guerrero is now scheduled to fight on October 24 at the Dorchester Armory in Boston, Massachusetts, against Abdullah Randolph. Only time will tell whether Guerrero puts it all together and becomes a major player in the sport. For now, we just have to keep a close watch as his career progresses, starting with this next fight in October.
