It wasn’t easy, but Jaime Munguia retained his WBA super middleweight title as he scored a unanimous decision over Nikita Zon (12-1-1, 10 KOs) in the co-feature to Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbill on DAZN PPV.

The judges scored this one 116-112 and 117-111 x2 for Munguia, who made a successful first title defense on Saturday night. After the fight, Munguia (47-2, 35 KOs) rated himself a “6/7 out of 10” and said the fight against Bektemir Melikuziev is next.

Things got chippy right from the opening round as Zon landed a three-punch combination that shook Munguia up a bit. Then there was some holding, and after a break, Munguia hit Zon, prompting the referee to warn both fighters. Munguia landed a hard left hook to Zon’s head, which rocked him before the end of the round.

Munguia settled in the second round as he began to land big combinations to Zon’s head. Munguia’s punches were having a significant effect on Zon throughout the round.

In the third round, Munguia began to pour it on as Zon couldn’t pick up the pace fast enough to deflect. In the last 30 seconds, though, Zon landed a right uppercut that hurt Munguia, who was leaning on the ropes. Zon landed four consecutive punches after that as Munguia did not throw a punch. Once he was able to get off the ropes, Munguia landed a straight right hand right before the sound of the bell.

Munguia came firing back in the fourth round after his trainer, Eddy Reynoso, told him between rounds that Zon was too slow and shouldn’t be landing punches on him. Munguia’s straight right hand landed in the middle of the round, sending Zon back a few steps. Munguia finished the round with a quick combination as Zon walked slowly to his corner.

In the fifth round, Munguia landed a huge overhand right on the tip of Zon’s chin, which badly hurt him. Zon survived the round but was clearly hurt by the punch.

The sixth round was a war scene. Zon hurt Munguia badly with a right uppercut, and the end appeared near. Zon poured it on, and Munguia seemed almost out. Then, all of a sudden, Munguia came back and hurt Zon badly with an overhand right and a left hook. Both fighters were badly hurt but survived the round.

After a wild sixth, the seventh round was more about regrouping for both fighters after a hellacious round.

From the eighth round on, Munguia took over the fight and used his championship-level experience to take control.
