Julio César Chávez vs Floyd Mayweather Jr on September 16?

Boxing has taken its foot off the gas when it comes to these exhibitions as they aren’t happening as often as they were two to three years ago, but now another seems to be making its rounds. On Saturday night, the great Mexican legend and hall of famer Julio Cesar Chavez posted a fight poster with him facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Monday, September 16, in Las Vegas, NV. This seems to be either trolling or a way to gauge the interest from the public as Mayweather faces John Gotti III in Mexico on Saturday night. This is straight out of the Mayweather marketing playbook as there hasn’t been much interest in his fight against Gotti III, but now, with a potential Chavez fight, people will want to tune into his PPV event.

The 62-year-old Chavez from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, was last in the ring on June 20, 2021, facing Hector Camacho Jr. in a four-round exhibition. It’s always been with headgear and bigger gloves during Chavez’s exhibition run. The fight was just two guys shaking it out and giving it a go one last time. Chavez, at that point, said goodbye to exhibitions but two years later scheduled an exhibition with the great Erik Morales, which Chavez ended up canceling due to an injury of his “left cartilage close to his heart.” If this fight happens on a Monday night in Las Vegas, it will surely be nothing more than a four-round showcase for those who are into the nostalgia part of it.

As for Mayweather, he continues to milk the exhibition circuit, which adds to the huge amount of money he’s made from the sport. Mayweather will keep doing these events as long as fans pay to see them live at the arena or on PPV. This event would not surprise me if it did happen, and it would be officially announced this week in Mexico while Mayweather promotes the fight with Gotti III.

Is Chavez vs. Mayweather something you would be interested in watching, even if you know it will be a four-rounder with headgear? I guess we just have to find out if this one gets announced and what type of attention it draws from the fans of the sport.
