Add FightsATW on GoogleOCEANSIDE, Calif– Unified minimumweight & Ring Magazine champion Oscar Collazo fought two weight classes above his division on Saturday night, but that didn’t matter.
Collazo (15-0, 12 KOs) dominated Nadier Valdez (15-4-2, 12 KOs) from the start and, after three knockdowns in the second round, Valdez’s corner was forced to throw in the towel. Collazo scored a second-round TKO and, after the fight, said he feels great at that weight class.
Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya quickly put on his promoter hat when interviewed by Chris Mannix and said he would like to put Collazo vs. unified flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval next, either in Puerto Rico or Los Angeles. Although there was talk of continuing on the path of undisputed at 105 pounds, it looks like the plan has now shifted toward a fight between Collazo and Sandoval at flyweight later this year.
In the opening round, Collazo circled Valdez, throwing the right jab to gauge distance. Once he felt comfortable, Collazo moved forward and threw his straight left. Valdez looked to counter throughout the round but never really got his offense off.
In the second round, a left hook from Collazo sent Valdez crashing down for the first knockdown of the fight. Valdez beat the count but was met with a right hook from Collazo that sent him down for the second time. Valdez beat the count again, and when the fight resumed, Collazo landed a left hook that sent Valdez down for the third time, forcing his corner to stop the fight.
Collazo earns the second-round TKO, but more importantly, has generated buzz for a fight against Sandoval that wasn’t there before Saturday’s fight.
Oscar Collazo vs. Nadier Valdez Undercard Result
Yair Gallardo (11-0, 9 KOs) scored a unanimous decision (97-92, 98-91 and 96-93) over Buneet Bisla (14-1, 7 KOs) in the co-main. Although Gallardo produced two vicious knockdowns, the fight as a whole dragged.
Ruslan Abdullaev (5-0, 3 KOs) scores two knockdowns over Orestes Velazquez (8-2, 7 KOs) en route to a fifth-round TKO victory.
Joshua Edwards (7-0, 6 KOs) scored a dominant second-round TKO over Garreth Payton (7-3, 4 KOs). It was a combination of punches that led to the knockout. Edwards did a good job of figuring out Payton, an awkward fighter.
Cayden Griffiths (9-0, 8 KOs) was very patient and calculated in his first scheduled eight-round fight, scoring a third-round TKO over Alan Edgar Ayala Crisosto (12-7, 8 KOs). Griffiths was conservative with his offense early, but when he threw punches, they were hard and accurate. He scored a knockdown in the second round with a right hook to the body, and the end came in the next round.
Daniel Garcia (14-0, 11 KOs) kept the knockout streak that began in the first two fights by stopping Christopher Rodriguez (13-3-1, 11 KOs) in the first round of their fight. After landing a vicious left hook to Rodriguez’s head, the latter stumbled and fell for the first knockdown of the fight. He got up but was then met with a flurry of punches from Garcia, which sent Rodriguez down again. This time, he wouldn’t get up. Garcia earns a first-round knockout.
Nikolai Terteryan (3-0, 3 KOs) wasted no time, landing a right hook to the body of Depries Johnson (5-14) less than 30 seconds into the first round, forcing Johnson to take a knee. The referee counted to 10, and Johnson made no effort to get up. Terteryan earned a first-round knockout.
Although Lorenzo Garcia (1-0, 1 KO) took almost half of the first round to really get going, when he did, a right hand badly hurt Tylan Gilmore-Smith (1-1-1). Gilmore-Smith would survive the round, but in the second, Garcia landed a huge left hook that sat Gilmore-Smith down in the corner, knocking him out. The referee wasted no time in stopping it after Gilmore-Smith was clearly not getting up. Garcia earned a second round knockout in his debut.
