Prime Video ‘Gloves Off’: Thurman-Tszyu & Rolly-Cruz Ep 2 Recap

“When you see what I am outside, it’s different than when you are in the ring with me. A lot of fighters don’t understand, and I may look “basic,” but once I get in the ring, it becomes much more complicated than just “basic” for them. I feel like I am the boogeyman”- Tim Tszyu

The second episode started with Tim Tszyu saying the above while sitting at a dining room table. The camera then goes to Tszyu jumping into the pool of the house where he is staying for this training camp in Las Vegas, NV. This episode doesn’t have the chapter labels on the segments but does give the viewer the location of where they are filming.

The first segment returns to St. Petersburg, FL, where Keith Thurman goes into a tub full of ice water, which he uses to recover from the day’s workout, citing that he is now 35 years old. The funny part of this segment was when Thurman called out all the nicknames he’s been labeled with while not being active in the ring. Thurman said, “Keith ‘One’ Time Thurman, Keith ‘Sometime’ Thurman, Keith ‘Once Upon A Time’ Thurman- Keith ‘We are about to shock the world and do it one more time’ Thurman. That’s what’s coming up next.”

The episode then travels to Mexico, where Isaac Cruz is shown training in the early hours of the day, and then it cuts to him with his family at home. Cruz’s wife would go into the struggles they had encountered when they barely had enough to eat. Now, she serves as Cruz’s chef for training camps and ensures everyone in the house is on the same meal plan during those times to avoid any temptation for Cruz as he cuts weight.

After being in Mexico with Cruz, the cameras head to Las Vegas, NV, where Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is shown getting instructions from his new trainer, Ismael Salas. Romero goes into the history between the two and how he is learning something new each day. Afterward, Romero is seen spending time with his father at a local Cuban restaurant surrounded by friends.

The episode then goes to Tszyu, who talks about his team and gets into the legacy of father Kostya Tszyu and what their relationship is like these days. Tszyu expresses his desire to make a name for himself without always being considered the son of a legend.

The last segment before the montage goes to Thurman’s home, where his wife and two kids spend some time with him. Then Thurman is seen at a gym talking to a young Michigan wide receiver and explaining how boxing is a one-man sport with all the work done before the fight.

The second episode was just under 27 minutes, but it felt more like the “All Access” shows we have seen for years. The one thing about the Prime Video production is that the video quality seems to be a higher grade, so it feels like a more advanced production than we’ve seen in years past with HBO & Showtime. Regardless, both episodes were enjoyable and will push the March 30 PPV well.
