Don’t call it a comeback!

Robert Meriwether III is headed to “Naptown” with hopes of putting his opponent to sleep.

Meriwether, a 21-year-old lightweight hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, but training in Las Vegas, will face Angel Barrera in an eight-round bout from the La Flaca at the Square in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The fight for Meriwether is not unlike writing or art; it is about the silence or the blank space he hopes to fill. In April, Meriwether suffered a shocking majority-decision loss to Tony Hirsch Jr. Hirsch has since beaten another unbeaten fighter and looks the part of the 2026 Prospect of the Year, while Meriwether has rebuilt in the gym with his father and co-trainer, Cromwell “Bullet” Gordon.

Meriwether, 10-1 (4 KOs), has heard the doubts, but even more the silence. In January, after defeating Cesar Correa, he was lauded as one of the most promising up-and-comers. One performance later, and people have doubts. The adage “you are only as good as your last fight” is forever true, especially for a developing fighter who hasn’t built a strong bond with the fans.

Barrera holds a record of 5-4 (1 KO), but that only tells part of the story. He has fought Abdullah Mason, Justin Cardona, Justin Viloria, and Anthony Cuba in consecutive bouts. He might have lost those three fights, but he returned in June to knock out unbeaten Stockton, California, fighter Manuel De Jesus II Flores.

Barrera, a 26-year-old fighter training out of Chicago, is a true veteran with a no-frills record, but he is coming to win. For a fighter in Meriwether’s position, that is the most dangerous type of opponent. According to members of his team, that is why they chose this fight.

“No one wants to lose, but I know God has a great plan for me, and I will be patient and trust that great plan,” Meriwether told FightsATW.com. “Now I know who’s with me and who has ill intentions.”
