What’s at stake for Troy Williamson and Callum Simpson when they rematch on a domestic U.K. card at First Direct Arena in Leeds, Yorkshire, England?

Williamson (22-4-1, 16 KOs) is a gatekeeper; Simpson (18-1, 13 KOs), a promising prospect, has made his first major mistake. It is a trajectory bout for Simpson to see if he can right the ship or if his career is going the wrong way.

Is Callum Simpson A Light Heavyweight?

Simpson is a big guy. He was riding momentum and looked to be a domestic fighter whose luck would run out at the world-class level. The true domestic British fighter glorifies toughness and courage over basic fundamentals of defense. This trait also probably makes them beloved among passionate fans.

That said, could Simpson’s KO loss be about the weight class as much as it is about his ability? Simpson is 6 ft 3 in and has been shrinking down to super middleweight since 2022, while starting his career at catchweights just north of light heavyweight.

How Does Callum Simpson Respond to Being Dropped (And Stopped)?

Simpson went down four times in round 10, with the last one signaling the end of the fight. In the bout before Williamson, he was dropped by Ivan Zucco in the first round. At 29, are we seeing his ability to take damage wear out, or something else?  

Troy Williamson: World-Class Good, Domestic Great? 

Williamson will never be mistaken for a world champion unless the circumstances line up perfectly, but he is quite the gatekeeper. He can do everything alright. He moves alright, he punches alright, and he has alright defense. Against Simpson, Harry Scarff, Ted Cheeseman, and Mark Dickinson, alright was enough to get the job done.

Williamson is the level above domestic that truly domestic fighters can’t beat. While fighters like Jahi Tucker and Josh Kelly easily outpointed him, fighters with certain flaws struggle, as we saw last year.

Gradus Kraus

Gradus Kraus (11-0, 10 KOs) is a promising light heavyweight who will fight on the undercard. He is taking on Sean Hemphill, a veteran who found himself in a classic against David Stevens in 2023. He lost his last fight to Ty Mitchell and to world champion William Scull. Kraus is a hard-hitting prospect who appears to be getting a major push. This is the toughest fight of his career on paper, and it is his third fight of the year.

What Does The Eye Test Say?

You would assume Simpson will adjust, but the combination of concerns about the weight class being right for him and being dropped in his past two fights makes it a fight. Simpson’s career is on the line, and Williamson will get more opportunities, win or lose. It is a fight with pay-per-view consequences, but without the titles on the line.  

What Do The Odds Say? 

Simpson is a slight favorite, but it will be interesting to see where the late money falls for this and how the line moves.
