Add FightsATW on GoogleIt wasn’t an exciting fight, but Teofimo Lopez boxed his way to a shocking majority decision over Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (17-3, 13 KOs), becoming the new WBA welterweight champion.
The judges saw this one 114-114, 115-113, and 116-112 for Lopez (23-2, 13 KOs) in a fight that those on social media and on the DAZN telecast saw as much wider for Lopez. After the fight, Lopez did not commit to calling anyone out but said he will be a father again and will take some time off to rest. This means he is done for this year.
In the opening round, Lopez was the busier of the two fighters, using his left jab. When Lopez committed to his straight right hand, Romero would counter with a left hook. There were plenty of feints throughout the round as both fighters were gauging distance.
Lopez continued dictating the pace of the fight throughout the second round behind his left jab. Romero continued to counter Lopez’s offense with the left hook, but Lopez was the busier fighter. In the third round, Lopez was on the front foot, pushing his offense, while Romero stayed on the back foot and threw few punches. Romero showed too much respect for Lopez in this round.

Although Romero continued to be on the back foot, in the middle of the fourth round, Romero landed a check left hook that left Lopez off balance. It was the best punch of the round. In the fifth round, Romero landed a huge left hook that caused a bad cut over Lopez’s eye. Romero followed it with a huge right hand that hurt Lopez badly. Lopez survived the round, but his face was a bloody mess.
Lopez had a good bounce-back round in the sixth as he kept the pressure on Romero, who appeared to take the round off. Romero was taking deep breaths and using his legs more to evade Lopez’s offense. In the seventh round, Lopez was in control and landed a few right hooks to Romero’s body as Romero kept moving around the ring. Romero landed his left hook here and there, but right at the bell, he landed one that buckled Lopez’s legs.
Lopez showed his cat-like reflexes in the eighth round as he was catching and shooting. Lopez switched to the back foot, forcing Romero to the front, but that played to Lopez’s advantage with his counterpunching ability.
Rounds 9-12 were all Lopez, who never lost control of the fight.
Although the judges saw a completely different fight, one thing we can all agree on is that the right guy won the fight on the scorecards.
