Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards on Wilder vs. Parker: ‘Wilder Will Hurt Him’

Boxing trainer Stephen “Breadman” Edwards has weighed in on the two big heavyweight clashes featuring Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.

This Saturday (December 23), Joshua and Wilder will compete on the same card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. AJ will go one-on-one with Otto Wallin, while “The Bronze Bomber” shares the ring with Joseph Parker. Obviously, the hope is that if both Joshua and Wilder emerge victorious in their respective bouts, then a matchup between the two can finally come to fruition.

While many are expecting Wilder to handle business with the upset-minded Parker, the same can’t be said for Joshua in his bout with Wallin. Boxing experts and fans alike have expressed concern that Wallin might just put a dent in the heavyweight mega fight plans.

Count “Breadman” Edwards as one of those pundits who believes Wallin is a dangerous fight for Joshua’s career. Appearing on episode 62 of “The Boxing Rush Hour Show,” Edwards explained to our own Abraham Gonzalez why Wallin is a serious threat.

“If they want to make Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua, Wallin was like the worst guy to pick,” Edwards said. “He’s like a B+ version of Usyk, who just beat Joshua twice. I’m really surprised at that match, I really am. I’m not saying Joshua can’t win, but why would you pick a guy ─ first of all, he’s not gonna get you ready for Wilder, but why pick that guy who fights very similar to a guy who just beat you twice and changed the whole course of your career? If Joshua wins this fight, it’ll be really a testament to his fortitude.”

Joshua is on the cusp of another massive fight, but he’s also on the verge of a career collapse if he can’t get past Wallin. After suffering two losses against Oleksandr Usyk, “AJ” has earned wins over Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius, who had a fight just one week prior. Even with the KO win over Helenius, many in the boxing world have been left unimpressed by “AJ,” and this will be his chance to prove he’s ready for Wilder.

As far as the Wilder vs. Parker fight, “Breadman” has little doubt of how that fight will end. “Wilder’s gonna hurt him,” Edwards said. “Wilder will hurt him. Might be lucky they go five, six rounds.”
