Teofimo Lopez vs Jamaine Ortiz Results: Teofimo Escapes With A Unanimous Decision

After a long delay, the judges came with the unanimous decision scorecards of 117-111, 115-113, and 115-113 for Teofimo Lopez (20-1, 8 KOs) as he retains the WBO and Ring Magazine junior welterweight titles. Jamaine Ortiz (17-2-1, 8 KOs) thought he won the fight, but the judges favored Lopez, who was bringing the fight to him throughout the night.

In the first round, Ortiz started the fight in the southpaw stance and strictly went into a counter-punching mode while using his legs to move around the ring effectively. Lopez chased him a little and landed one shot at a time while using a ton of feints. Ortiz continued to use his legs to move around the ring in the second round while Lopez chased more than cutting the ring off. Lopez did land big single shots, but Ortiz landed the cleaner shots while counter-punching.

Ortiz began to get aggressive with his offense in the third round, but it played into Lopez’s game plan. Ortiz was hit more throughout the round but quickly turned back to using his feet and waiting on Lopez, as that was seeing more success for him. In the fourth round, Lopez landed a left hook to the head, which was the best punch of the round. After inviting Ortiz in, Lopez used that opportunity to land some big, short shots. Ortiz felt it and went back to using his feet to move around the ring.

How did you score Teofimo Lopez vs Jamaine Ortiz?

Ortiz appeared to be winning the early rounds, as Lopez wasn’t throwing enough punches. Ortiz was moving around a ton but also landing the cleaner counter shots. Lopez continued to show frustration in the sixth round as he followed Ortiz all over the ring. There was a headbutt in the seventh round that led to a nasty cut over the left eye of Ortiz. Lopez used this moment to regain momentum as he landed some big right hands.

Rounds eight through ten were more of Ortiz moving around the ring and only throwing a few punches while looking for counter-punching opportunities. In the last two rounds, Ortiz would take his foot off the gas, allowing Lopez to get off on his shots. Although Lopez would make gestures to suggest Ortiz was moving too much, he had difficulty cutting off the ring the entire fight.
