The Top 5 WrestleMania Moments

WrestleMania is WWE’s biggest annual pay-per-view event. There is no other show the company puts on with as much pageantry and attention as “The Showcase of the Immortals.” WWE has seen its largest show go from basketball arenas to jam-packed stadiums. The celebrity list grows every year, with big names like Snoop Dogg performing at “The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment.”

There have been 39 WrestleMania events. As one can imagine, making a list of just 5 moments from WWE’s flagship event is no easy task, but these were the times that truly defined what WrestleMania is all about.

5. Rey Mysterio Wins World Heavyweight Championship At WrestleMania 22 – April 2, 2006, Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois

This one was a tear-jerker for many wrestling fans. On November 13, 2005, Eddie Guerrero unexpectedly passed away due to heart failure. The wrestling legend was only 38 years old, and he was an active WWE superstar at the time of his passing.

To honor Eddie’s passing, WWE booked his close friend Rey Mysterio to win the 2006 Royal Rumble match. Despite facing adversity in storyline, even losing his WrestleMania spot to Randy Orton at one point, Mysterio found his way back in the World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 22 in a triple threat match against Orton and Kurt Angle. Mysterio hit the 619 on Orton, followed by a springboard hurricanrana to score the pinfall and capture the World Heavyweight Championship in honor of his late friend.

4. Miss Elizabeth Saves “Macho Man” Randy Savage From Sherri Martel – March 24, 1991, Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California

We go from one emotional WrestleMania moment to another. WrestleMania 7 featured a retirement match between “Macho Man” Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior. In the storyline leading up to this moment, Savage and Miss Elizabeth had gone their separate ways due to Savage’s obsessive and insecure behavior on TV.

Savage ended up being managed by the “Sensational” Sherri Martel as a result. Despite the split, both Savage and Elizabeth remained in love. After The Ultimate Warrior pinned Savage, Martel attacked the fallen superstar. Elizabeth, who was sitting in the crowd, hopped the guardrail and pulled Sherri off of Savage. Elizabeth and Savage hugged inside the ring, completing their emotional reunion.

3. The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan At WrestleMania X8 – March 17, 2002, SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

To this day, wrestling fans still get chills whenever this match is discussed. When The Rock and Hulk Hogan were booked for a match at WrestleMania X8, most experts and fans knew the significance of it all. It was very much new school vs. old school, and both men were megastars of the wrestling industry.

What wasn’t quite expected was just how special the opening moment of that match would be, thanks to the fans who packed the SkyDome to witness history. Before The Rock and Hogan could even make a move, there was a deafening buzz in the crowd that lasted for what felt like an eternity. Even Hogan and The Rock had to look around the stadium and take in just how special the atmosphere was. Ultimately, The Rock pinned Hogan with the People’s Elbow, but the two embraced after fighting off Kevin Nash and Scott Hall of the NWO post-match.

2. Brock Lesnar Breaks The Undertaker’s WrestleMania Streak – April 6, 2014, Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana

Fans who attended WrestleMania 30 were in for perhaps the most shocking moment in the history of WWE’s annual event. The Undertaker entered his WrestleMania 30 match against Brock Lesnar with a perfect record of 21-0 at “The Grandest Stage of Them All.” Most assumed that the streak would continue, but all good things must come to an end.

With big match losses against John Cena and Triple H, many felt Lesnar desperately needed a massive boost. WWE felt things would turn around for “The Beast” big time if he was booked to break The Undertaker’s streak. After hitting three F-5s, Lesnar became the first man to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania, leaving fans stunned. WWE cameras famously captured WWE superfan Ellis Mbeh with a shocked look on his face.

1. Hulk Hogan Slams Andre The Giant – March 29, 1987, Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan

This list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include the Wrestlemania III main event between Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant. The stage was set for the big WWE Championship match after Andre turned his back on Hogan to align with heel manager Bobby “The Brain” Heenan.

WWE positioned Hogan as a massive underdog in his storyline with Andre. The big question was, how would Hogan be able to get Andre on the mat to land the big leg drop? Hogan answered that question by mustering the strength to bodyslam the giant in perhaps the most iconic moment in WrestleMania history. Hogan then landed his famous leg drop to score the pinfall.
