Tim Tszyu: Potential Fight With Erislandy Lara, Recap of Errol Spence Jr Fight & Relationship With No Limit Boxing

Former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu is about two months removed from beating Errol Spence Jr. in Australia, which has now led to a potential showdown with WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara.

Reports from FOX Sports Australia indicate that the fight between Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs) and Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) is close to being finalized for December in Australia, according to No Limit’s George Rose. Earlier in the week, Tszyu confirmed that the Lara fight is the one being negotiated and that he is currently in Thailand doing some pre-camp work. When asked why the Lara fight appears to be next, Tszyu gave a simple answer, with his stoic look.

 “I’ve been watching Lara for years and years,” Tszyu told FightsATW. “Stylistically, he’s very hard to beat. He moves around. He’s just a very, very good boxer. It’s an intriguing matchup.”

When considering the potential matchup between Tszyu and Lara, it makes sense for the Australian, as Lara is also a southpaw, like Spence, whom he fought in July. Speaking of his last fight, Tszyu was asked whether what he saw that night and the version of Spence he fought met or exceeded his expectations.

“I think he [Spence] wasn’t able to do anything because he’s never fought someone so big and so reactive,” said Tszyu. “It’s what I had to bring to the table to slow him down. He did come swinging, and he was throwing it all. You don’t just lose it all. He isn’t even that old; 37 or 36. But I was surprised. I thought he was going to be a little better, but it was still one helluva show, one helluva fight between us. It wasn’t all easy.”

Tszyu getting the Spence fight and now what looks like the Lara one has a lot to do with his promoter, No Limit Boxing, not willing to give up on Tszyu. They continue to show a tight bond between Promoter and Fighter, which is rare to see in the, at times, nasty business of boxing.

“I’m very blessed,” said Tszyu. “Even through my downfall and losses, No Limit has been able to pick me back up and put me back on the drawing board. They look after me, and I’m very blessed. We both started this journey sort of together. They invested their marbles into me because they had vision in me, and I had the same for them. We came together in 2019, and to this day, we are still running the sh*t here in Australia; Tim Tszyu and No Limit.”

As Tszyu eases his way back into training camp, the prospect of him fighting Lara has fans very interested in the fight. Let’s see if they can finalize the deal and announce it in the coming weeks.
