Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs) has jumped right into the Tim Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) fight after a 3-year-long hiatus. With their fight scheduled for July 25, Tszyu believes that he (Spence Jr) might just live to regret not taking a warm-up fight.

Talking to The Ring Magazine, Tszyu seemed surprised that Spence Jr. did not take a warm-up fight before their showdown.

“Stylistically it’s a great fight, what he’s got to prove, as well. This is the best division coming up, so yeah, there’s just a lot on the line for both of us,” he said. “I’m going to give him that regret feeling, you should’ve taken a warm-up fight.”

Spence’s team chose Tszyu because it offered a high-profile comeback against a recognizable name without immediately throwing Spence Jr into a world title fight. After his sizeable break from the ring following his loss to Terence Crawford, he wanted a meaningful challenge at 154 pounds, and Tszyu undoubtedly fit the bill. Moreover, previous discussions with other top names, including Sebastian Fundora and Jermell Charlo, failed to materialize.

As for the lack of a warm-up fight, Spence Jr deliberately chose to skip one because, in his own words, he believes he performs well after long layoffs and wanted to return straight into a significant event rather than risk losing momentum or public interest in a tune-up. He has also said he feels physically refreshed.

Tszyu, however, is ready for whatever his opponent brings.

“I feel like Errol’s a monotone-type guy. What he’s good at is that constant pressure, constant punching, and it doesn’t have to be flashy and quick and stuff like that. He just knows when to throw the punch and he keeps on going until it’s sink or swim type situation. So, that’s what he’s good at,” he said.

“Last Hurray”

Tszyu seems to have a far more sinister plan than just winning the fight. In the same interview, he even admitted that he was looking to ensure that it was Spence Jr’s last fight.

“How bad does he want it when you’ve been there, done that in the sport? It’s sort of like ‘Do I need to this? Do I need to keep on going?’ That’s what I want to test when he starts talking to himself…If you take the heart away from him then he’s gone,” he said. “It’s the last hurrah for Errol Spence. Get in and watch his last fight.”
