WBC Middleweight Champ Jermall Charlo Arrested For DWI

WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (33-0, 26 KOs) has again found himself in trouble with the law. According to a citation posted online and a news report by TMZ Sports, he was arrested on Monday night in Peerland,TX.

The sports news website reported the following:

A spokesperson for the Pearland Police Dept. tells TMZ Sports … Charlo, riding in his red Lambo, and another car were involved in a collision at around 6:41 PM — but after a verbal argument between the two drivers ensued, Charlo left the scene, which cops say is a no-no.

When authorities attempted to pull him over, they say Charlo ignored their sirens … until he was boxed in by cops at a red light roughly a mile away from the accident area.

Cops say they arrested the 33-year-old at the scene … and when they administered sobriety tests at the jail a short time later — he showed signs of intoxication.

Charlo was ultimately booked on three separate misdemeanor charges — DWI with a BAC of greater than .15, fleeing a police officer, and leaving the scene of a crash involving $200 of damage or more.”

The 33-year-old Charlo has been in trouble with the law as recently as December when he was arrested for a misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury to a family member. Charlo was also arrested in 2021 for allegedly stealing from a waitress, which was later dismissed.

Charlo admitted to having mental health issues and that it was something he had been working hard on dealing with. Charlo was out of the ring for over two years before earning a unanimous decision in November against Jose Benavidez. Charlo was on Instagram as recently as this past weekend as he told his fans that he would be retiring from the sport. With this report from his arrest on Monday night now circulating through social media, the pressure will be on the WBC to make the long overdue decision regarding his status as their middleweight champion.
