Add FightsATW on GoogleShakur Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) and Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) have gone from friends to being at warring ends. But what went wrong? Stevenson is just as confused as everybody else.
In a conversation with FightHype, Stevenson said he was unsure why he was on the receiving end of all the hatred.
“There’s so much that happened in that situation. I don’t know what it is with that dude; I don’t know why there is like so much hatred upon me, but it is what it is. At the end of the day, look at this: if you ever look at me when I talk about him now, when I was younger, I used to kind of be a little bit different; I used to be straight disrespectful,” he said. “As I got older, more mature, I started learning how to speak in front of these cameras, learning how to talk.”
The two were once close, regularly sparring and helping each other during their early years in boxing. As both men rose to stardom, however, their relationship deteriorated, with Stevenson saying he cannot identify one specific incident that caused the fallout but believes Davis harbors some insecurity toward him. He has also grown increasingly frustrated by what he sees as a one-sided dynamic; he continues to describe Davis as a “special” and “tremendous” fighter, while claiming the latter rarely gives him similar credit. The rivalry has spilled into social media and become intertwined with years of talk about a potential blockbuster fight.
Yet beneath the bravado, Stevenson insists there is no genuine malice on his side. He said he does not wish Davis any ill will.
“If you ever pay attention to me when I talk about him, I always say like he’s a special fighter, he’s a tremendous fighter. I try not to talk down on his name because I know that he’s a good fighter; I give him his credit when it’s due,” he said and then went on to add. “But if you listen to him, he don’t never say nothing good about me. He don’t got nothing good to say about me. But I think it comes to like some type of insecurity.”
“I’m The Truth”
Meanwhile, he hopes that Davis can get back to his grind and leave the beef in the past.
“You know I’m the truth. Like, at the end of the day, you know I’m the truth; I know you the truth. So we the best of the best, and I been saying it for years. So I’m going to keep it that way. I ain’t going to lose my integrity,” he said during the same interview. “Hopefully he do his thing, I don’t wish no ill upon him. Hopefully he come back and get all that other stuff situated.”
