In the era of the two-night PLE (Premium Live Event), the company reserves its biggest storyline featuring the biggest star for Sundays. In the case of night two’s featured bout, Roman Reigns embodies that role and demands the top spot as the sport’s top asset while Seth Rollins exists as his perennial number two, the Sammy Sosa to Roman’s Mark McGuire, or the Jordan to Seth’s Pippen.

The six-bout WWE Summer Slam match card for night two will tell one of the final chapters in the storied feud between Reigns and Rollins while also presenting the two men’s mid-card titles as well. Aside from those matches, night two’s card is the only one that can guarantee a new champion with the 5-way ladder match crowning the interim WWE women’s champ instead of the injured Rhea Ripley.

Darius Rucker will kick off the show on Sunday by singing the National Anthem while Danhausen pulls ‘ice cream truck’ duty in “The Twin Cities” for the entirety of fight week.

ROMAN REIGNS(c) vs. SETH ROLLINS (WWE Heavyweight Championship)

Some say Punk-Rhodes is the most interesting match at SummerSlam, while others point to the HIAC match between Oba and Brock. However, the Reigns-Rollins showdown exists as the match with the weightiest stakes. When this program launched, Rollins cut a promo urging Roman to consider their current place in the WWE as a new crop of young talent continues to rise. He said that in their storied feud, they are closer to the end of the ‘book’ than the beginning, acknowledging that this could be the last time they face off.

That subplot was quickly abandoned in favor of a classic theme of their rivalry—Seth’s constant spot behind Roman. From Roman’s side of the program, he utilized brutal honesty as his weapon of choice, eviscerating Rollins with mere facts and simple truths that separate the two future Hall of Famers.

PREDICTION: Roman retains

This match feels closer to a 50/50 contest than the wide betting line favoring Roman would suggest; that said, The Bloodline still commands primetime on weekly WWE TV. It feels probable based on past bookings that shenanigans are in store, but the power of Roman’s win over Punk at this year’s WrestleMania offered compelling storytelling without the crutch of other performers (celebrity or otherwise) being involved.

If given the chance to run it clean, Roman will still find a way to bend the will (and the rules) of the match in his favor— just do not call it ‘cheating.’

CHARLOTTE FLAIR—TIFFANY STRATTON—JADE CARGILL—CHELSEA GREEN—LASH LEGEND/GIULIA— (Five-Way Ladder Match Interim SmackDown Women’s World Championship)

Night two’s answer to the Hell in a Cell gimmick, this is one of two matches on the night where the winner achieves victory by retrieving a prize strung up prior to the bell. In this case, the prize is well worth the climb, as Rhea Ripley’s recent injury presents an opportunity. Aside from the interim title, the ladder match has deep roots at SummerSlam, and it is a tremendous show of trust in these specific athletes and the women’s division in general—rightfully earned.

PREDICTION: Charlotte claims the championship… Here’s hoping for Chelsea

Typically, it is bad faith to predict without the full cast of participants known, but it is safe to say that this match will come down to Jade and Flair. WWE has been building towards that showdown, and this match could be the catalyst. It would make sense for Flair to win and set up the younger star in position to dethrone the proven vet.

That said, Chelsea claiming the belt after facing her ‘fear of heights’ would be one of the more memorable moments in the span of two nights.

PENTA(c) vs. CHAD GABLE (Men’s Intercontinental Championship)

This is one of the more anticipated matches on the entire two-night card, but you cannot help but wonder if this moment could have meant more in a ‘Heel vs Face’ program. As it stands, Penta has been one of the most successful mid-card faces on the main roster while Gable is coming off one of the most successful character arcs in company history.

PREDICTION: Gable gets the gold

This is Gable’s night where he finishes off the ‘IC title chase’ storyline that WWE TV has featured in video packages—it would be disappointing if his family is missing from this weekend’s celebration considering they were there the night he lost his mask in AAA.

FINN BALOR vs. SAMI ZAYN (#1 Contender’s Match for Undisputed World Title)

Two men who consider CM Punk the only difference between being world/heavyweight champion will face off for the right to challenge for the title currently held by CM Punk. Whether Punk is champion by Sunday is not their concern, because only one of them can swim in the deep at a time. Both men are former champions and have played major roles at the top of the card, though mostly spent as set pieces among powerful factions, leaning into the likelihood that the loser will win a reserved seat in catering.

PREDICTION: Sami succeeds

The safe money is on Sami if for no better reason than his storyline fits with either Punk or Cody holding the strap.

TRICK WILLIAMS(c) vs. BARON CORBIN (Men’s United States Championship)

If Trick Williams is going to break through to that next level, it will not be because he defeated Baron Corbin in the same year that he received a custom Fury title belt. Corbin popping up in WWE again has been mostly blah, and creative is better off making this feud one-and-done.

PREDICTION: Williams wins to retain

DANHAUSEN vs. DOMINIK MYSTERIO (Human Monies on a Pole Match

$100,000)

In an unstable economy where ‘affordability’ is not a major concern, one hundred thousand dollars is nothing to turn your nose up at even if you are a well-paid writer at FightsATW. That said, even Heyman would advise Dom to ditch that six-figure match in favor of a million-dollar match at SummerSlam. Danhausen has been big business since his shaky debut in WWE, but that does not mean he is ‘money’ in the ring. Dom beat Cena for the IC title last November and held multiple titles spanning two promotions, but now he is ‘doing the job’ by even entertaining a match with the kayfabe vampire.

PREDICTION: Dom dominates

Dom will win, and there will be plenty of interference, but hopefully he returns to a more serious program leading into TripleMania.
