Lamont Roach Jr Has A ‘Bundle of Skills’ For William Zepeda

Lamont Roach Jr (25-1-3, 10 KOs) is all set to fight William Zepeda (33-1, 27 KOs) for the vacant WBC lightweight crown. But how will he hold up against the ‘Camaron’? He (Zepeda) will not know what hit him, or so says Roach.

At their final presser, Roach was respectful in his remarks about his opponent, while also reminding everyone that he was locked in and ready for the fight.

“I have a bundle of skills. I have a ton of will, heart like a lion, and cajones like Godzilla. William Zepeda does as well. It’s a hell of a clash. We can’t wait to see how it turns out Saturday night,” he said.

On paper, Roach‘s skill set is one of the more intriguing stylistic challenges Zepeda has faced. Exceedingly disciplined in his craft, Roach’s greatest strengths are timing and destructive counterpunching, which often emulsifies his opponents. He rarely wastes punches, and his footwork allows him to create subtle angles rather than constantly circling.

Moreover, he’s comfortable fighting at a measured pace where every exchange has purpose. Against an aggressive pressure fighter like Zepeda, those traits could be invaluable because Zepeda’s style naturally creates countering opportunities. Every time Zepeda steps in behind combinations, Roach has the chance to intercept him with hooks, uppercuts, or straight rights before pivoting away.

The challenge, however, is the sheer intensity of Zepeda’s offense. Few fighters throw punches at the volume he does, even maintaining that pace for all 12 rounds.

However, in Roach’s eyes, it’s his chance to prove himself against a proven pressure fighter.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to fight one of the best fighters in the weight class for so long. Zepeda has been the No. 1 contender in a few sanctioning bodies, and that’s something that we paid attention to. Once the opportunity came to fight for the WBC world championship, of course, I said yes,” he said.

However, there is one thing that Roach is certain about: Zepeda won’t be able to handle the punishment that he is planning to dish out on fight night.

 “We’ll see if his chin can hold up. If his chin can hold up, I’ll tip my hat off to him. I might take him to dinner after. To take the shots that I’m gonna deliver that night, round in and round out, it’s gonna be hard,” he said.
