Add FightsATW on GoogleBefore the major AEW ALL IN Wembley show in a month, AEW put on an amazing show from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. AEW Redemption featured a 12-match card topped by world champion Kenny “By God” Omega defending his title against the upstart Kevin Knight.
There were major moments to go along with some amazing matches, but following the events of tonight, the landscape of AEW has shifted. But at the end of tonight, it was a ‘terrible, not so very good night’ for the Death Ridders.
Kenny Omega def Kevin Knight (AEW World Title)
Many questioned whether Knight had the chops to go toe-to-toe with Omega in a main event world title match, but he showed up in a major way, even if it was the match’s aftermath that stole the show. The story had been a gradual one for Knight after turning heel on Darby Allin and aligning with the largest group of ‘bad guys’ since the NWO days. There was an obvious display of athletic prowess between the two, but it was the ring IQ from the young challenger that stood out the most.
Most assumed Knight would have no chance of winning, so when he ended up losing the match, it was both not surprising and sort of a relief knowing the amazing Kenny VS Will Ospreay is still intact for All In at the end of August.
Without glossing over the superb in-ring action, the post-match finish was the best close to the show fans could have hoped for as the Death Riders storyline involving Will and Kenny imploded. After Kenny retained, Moxley led his group of goons to beat down on the champ post-match.
Will tried to stop the Death Riders and, in the process, took out Castagnoli. Mox handed Ospreay the infamous plastic bag— the same one Mox has used to close out AEW PPVs in the most notorious of ways. Mox commanded Will to place the bag over Kenny’s head to complete his full ‘dark side’ transformation.
Will hesitated before ripping the bag open and finally standing up to the group led by a man who has been trying to mold Ospreay into his own image. The crowd erupted with ‘soccer chants’ echoing through the stadium in support of what Will did. After that, Ospreay told Kenny that from this point on, it was the two of them as they headed towards one of the most anticipated championship matches in wrestling history.
Other Action
The Young Bucks defeated The Death Riders in tag action, and the losses for the group did not stop there as Cope and Cage retained their AEW tag team title versus a Claudio and PAC challenge from the faction. The tag champs retained but were confronted by The Bucks in the post-match, where it was revealed that the two teams will face at ALL IN. There has been a hope among fans that a potential ladder match is reserved between The Bucks and the tag champs that helped invent the match for tag teams. Hopefully the match is made with that stipulation, and FTR are added to it.
Chris Jericho defeated Tommaso Ciampa in a No-Holds-Barred match following weeks of “The Painmaker” gimmick. Jericho has been doing a sort of Shang-Chi with his past gimmicks, so hopefully the worst of them is over, even if the work with Ciampa has been top-notch.
ANDRADE FUTURE WORLD CHAMP: It was another terrific performance from Andrade El Idolo as he defeated Mark Davis to win the AEW National Championship. Rumors have circulated that Andrade is in the running for a major push as he continues to crush his in-ring work and on-TV segments. With so much focus on Will and Kenny, and rightfully so, keeping an eye on Andrade could give a hint at the future threat to any world champion.
Willow Nightingale won the women’s AEW world title from THEKLA in a terrific match that has Mercedes Moné watching from the crowd. Willow has been one of AEW’s darlings, so to see her finally ‘realize’ her moment was an incredible payoff. Willow is a terrific face, so if the match against Moné is next, then she needs to step up her heelish ways to keep the heat. All of the elements are there for them to tell an amazing story.
