Devin Haney Hints At Elaborate Plan After WBO Order

A new order from the WBO has given Devin Haney (33-0, 15 KOs) barely 3 weeks to agree on the terms to fight his mandatory Keyshawn Davis (15-0, 10 KOs). However, it looks like Haney might just have a rather interesting idea for his career arc.

In an announcement on Tuesday, WBO gave both Haney and Davis 20 days to reach an agreement on the terms of their fight.

“Please be advised that, pursuant to the authority vested in the World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) Championship Committee under the WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests, the Committee hereby orders the immediate commencement of negotiations for the WBO Welterweight Mandatory Championship Contest between reigning WBO Welterweight Champion Devin Haney and the WBO’s number one world-rated contender, Mandatory Challenger, Keyshawn Davis,” said the order signed by WBO founder/chairman Luis Batista Salas.

Davis is the organization’s mandatory challenger for the welterweight title. Haney had been exploring bigger-money fights, but when those negotiations did not materialize, the WBO enforced its mandatory defense and ordered the two camps to begin negotiations. While the decision has generated debate because some fans believe Davis reached the mandatory position without facing many top welterweight contenders.

In fact, he was even asked by a fan if he’d pick the mandatory or choose the other Davis, the formidable Gervonta. And Haney certainly had the perfect response.

“Both of em.. I’m who your favorite fighter wish he was,” he wrote. And quickly followed up by announcing, “I just told u. One Davis after another.”

‘We’re In A Great Position”

Keyshawn’s manager, J. Prince, is rather elated at the prospect of having his fighter face Haney. Talking to FightHype, he mentioned that the decision on which fighter to pick finally rests in Haney’s hands.

“I feel like we’re in a great position. That question might have to be asked to Haney. I got two double barrel shotgun, you know what I mean? On both ends, and I got them blocked in. So, they got to see me one way or the other,” he said. “I’m looking forward to dealing with all of them in the future. Devin has a great manager in his father. Bill is my homie. Whatever decision they make has to be respected.”
