Add FightsATW on GoogleIt wasn’t the greatest fight you’ll ever see, but in the end, Tim Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs) earned a unanimous decision over Errol Spence Jr (28-2, 22 KOs) on Saturday night in Australia, live on DAZN PPV.
The three judges scored it 118-110 and 117-111 x 2 for Tszyu, who, after the fight, announced that he will be competing in the middleweight division moving forward and wants one of the champions next. When Spence was interviewed, he immediately said that his questions had been answered and that he was going back to his family and starting a new life. When asked to clarify whether that meant he was retiring, Spence acknowledged that he was hanging up his gloves.
In the opening round, Spence came out with the right jab, but he was pushing his punches. His footwork was a mess, as he was tripping around and constantly off balance. After a break, Tszyu hit Spence with an uppercut that caught Spence and hurt him. Spence later landed a looping left hook that stunned Tszyu. Spence did not look comfortable throughout the round.
Spence appeared more comfortable throughout the second round behind his right jab. He was still off balance in his footwork, but the 1-2 combinations were beginning to land for Spence. Tszyu squared himself up at different moments, which allowed Spence to land huge left hooks.
Tszyu kept following Spence around in the third round and moving on the inside without throwing any punches. Spence took advantage in these moments by throwing the right jab to Tszyu’s head and body. Spence was more active throughout the round. Tszyu listened to his trainer, Jeff Fenech, between rounds when Fenech said he needed to throw more punches. In the fourth round, Tszyu did just that and focused more on Spence’s body. That led to Tszyu landing more straight right hands to Spence’s head, who appeared to be getting buzzed by the big shots.
Round five was more of the same for Tszyu, and in the sixth round, Tszyu began landing a hard lead right hand that sent Spence’s head back several times. Spence tried to work off the right jab and circle, but Tszyu did a great job of cutting off the ring and forcing Spence to fight.
Tszyu began to wear down Spence more and more throughout the seventh round with the stab jab to the body and the sweeping right hand over Spence’s right jab. Tszyu kept applying heavy pressure as Spence threw fewer punches and moved more throughout the round. Tszyu continued to wear down Spence in the eighth round.
Rounds nine and ten were all Tszyu, but the 11th belonged to Spence, who had a big round. In the final round, Tszyu’s pressure and straight right hand closed the show for him.
