Floyd Mayweather Reveals Why He is the ‘Box Office’

The crown prince of boxing, Floyd Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs), has long been one of the biggest crowd pullers in the sport of boxing. But how big was ‘The Best Ever’? Mayweather answered the question by revealing why he is not just a boxer but the entire “box office.”

He was recently a guest on ‘The Pivot Podcast’ with NFL stars Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder. In conversation, Clark mentioned that Mayweather was the greatest inside the ring and also a hit at the box office due to his iconic status.

He then asked Mayweather if his prime performances were bigger events in Las Vegas than the Super Bowl or the Formula 1. “No athlete in history, 90 minutes. $750 million. You tell me who,” Mayweather responded. He mentioned that he loves football and basketball more than boxing and added that these sports are all that the Mayweather household watches while gambling.

Mayweather also stated that, as a boxer, he is capable of not only earning money but also creating it. “What these boxers do now, they’re boxers. I’m a box office. There is a difference. These fighters…they’re getting a bag when they go to Saudi Arabia. I’m not gonna lie, they’re getting great money, not good money, great money,” he said. “So of course, they want to see Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition. And, you already know what the payday’s gonna be.”

As the biggest earner in boxing, it is worth mentioning that two of the biggest paychecks in sports history. Mayweather banked $275 million when he fought UFC star Conor McGregor (22-6, 19 KOs) in 2017 and around $250 million for fighting Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) in 2015.

“Sister I never had”

The same podcast also saw Mayweather emotionally talking about the demise of his long-time assistant and friend, Kitchie Laurico. She died last March at the age of 47 due to health issues.

Mayweather mentioned that she was the only person in life that he could talk to about anything. And that Laurico knew his deepest secrets. “All my assistant wanted to do was support me and help me be the best man I can be, and she wanted my kids just to be positive, and she was a positive person,” he said. “that’s a sister I never had. A best friend I ever had.”
