What is next for Floyd Schofield after winning the WBA lightweight title over Lucas Bahdi on Saturday night in Chicago?

Schofield (20-0, 13 KOs), a boxing prodigy, now adds another feat to his resume: world champion at age 23. Schofield’s recent run has been up-and-down. Inactivity has plagued him. He knocked out Tevin Farmer in May 2025 and then waited until Saturday to return to the ring, as he was the mandatory challenger for the WBA title. He also has an outspoken father, who resembles Earl Woods, the father of Tiger Woods, and who sings the praises of his son, which is part of his narrative. Schofield had to earn the victory and showed skill and toughness to get the job done.

This weekend, Schofield penned some of his own story, showing he is a great fighter in his own right. Let’s look at some future matchups for Schofield.

William Zepeda

Zepeda is a fellow champion and is promoted by the same promoter as Schofield, Golden Boy Promotions. Zepeda is also a high-volume puncher, which would be an interesting wrinkle to see how Schofield handles that. Bahdi was a low-output, accurate puncher, and Zepeda’s fight against Lamont Roach raised questions about whether he might be the best lightweight. This is a no-brainer for 2027.

Abdullah Mason

Mason is another titleholder in the division. A young champion, a puncher, and a potential future superstar. This would be an exciting matchup between two young fighters on the cusp of stardom, fighting in their primes. Not just a great fight, but possibly one that changes the culture of when young fighters face each other.

Justin Pauldo

A good Texas fight. The two fighters train in Texas, and if Pauldo wins his next bout on ProBox TV, it would set the stage for a good regional homecoming and a solid matchup.

Joshua Pagan

Pagan is one of my favorite modern boxers. He has an old-school mentality and has taken tough, risky fights and won them. It would be nice to see Pagan rewarded for his path in the sport. He became a contender and is now near a title shot. Why not make a fight with Schofield?

Dzmitry Asanau

Asanau just beat Luis Santana. He didn’t look amazing, but he is an interesting fighter, and I am sure he would jump up in competition. It would be a compelling true world title defense for a young, up-and-coming champ.
